SeaWorld Releases 1,000th Rescued And Rehabilitated Sea Turtle (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Business, Videos.

SeaWorld hasn’t made too many friends in the animal welfare world. After a series of events involving the deaths of whales and a trainer, some want the marine park to call it quits.

On a positive note, SeaWorld doesn’t hold all of its animals captive forever.

The organization recently released its 1,000th sea turtle into the waters at Canaveral National Seashore. SeaWorld has had a turtle rescue and rehabilitation program in place since 1980.

Tommy Lee Asks SeaWorld To Release Its Sex Tapes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 10th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Videos.

Tommy Lee

Tommy Lee and SeaWorld have been at words in the media during the past week in a controversy over the marine park using the whale that killed a trainer last year to collect semen. Doing so puts other trainers at risk, as they have contact with the animal that was supposed to never have interaction with humans after a string of several incidents.

After Lee accused SeaWorld of using an “artificial vagina” to masturbate Tilly, the park fired back saying no such apparatus existed. Now, Lee argues he has proof and in a new letter to the organization, refers them to such a video on YouTube, along with statements made by a former worker. He also invites SeaWorld to allow him and PETA to tape the current methods for obtaining semen, if the old ones are no longer in use.

“Former SeaWorld scientist John Hall says in this article, “Early in the morning, the animal-care crew would take hot-water-filled cow vaginas and masturbate the males in the back tanks.” In this YouTube video, SeaWorld trainers demonstrate semen collection by standing in shallow water next to an orca and grabbing his penis until he ejaculates into a plastic bag.”

SeaWorld Whale Deaths–Whales Die Young And Regularly

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

ORLANDO - FEBRUARY 24: The sign at the entrance to SeaWorld February 24, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. A female trainer who presumably slipped and fell in to a holding tank was fatally injured after she was attacked by an orca. This is the third human death associated with the killer whale according to the Humane Society of the United States. (Photo by Matt Stroshane/Getty Images)

The recent deaths of three killer whales at SeaWorld certainly do nothing to appease animal rights activists who already view the marine park as an unsafe environment for the whales and people.

In the past 4 months, there have been three deaths–a 25 year old female, a 20 year old female and a 12 year old male. The exact cause of the most recent death is still under investigation, while officials have determined that the 20 year old died from complications giving birth.

PETA Dancing Condoms Promoting Spaying And Neutering In June

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Dedication Ceremony for PETA's Bob Barker Building

You’ve heard what’s on Gene Baur‘s and Farm Sanctuary’s agenda for this month in the realm of animal rights.

Now, the Los Angeles Times talks to Ingrid Newkirk to see what PETA’s plans are in their May in Animal News feature.

Since you’re already a veggie or at least reducing your meat intake, you won’t have to worry about the dancer rubber stopping you on the street with a vegetarian starter kit.

We don’t think there will be vegan, edible condoms in the kit either. Sorry.

When asked what PETA would be up to in June, Newkirk replied:

“A million projects, from promoting spaying and neutering through demonstrations featuring dancing condoms to distributing our free vegetarian/vegan starter kits. But we’ll also definitely be working hard to curb attendance at SeaWorld and at [Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s] shows. Indeed, we’ll continue to expose Ringling by circulating video footage of elephants being routinely beaten as well as photos of the cruel methods that Ringling uses to train baby elephants.”

Jack Hanna On SeaWorld, Safety And Government Intervention

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

121st Annual Tournament Of Roses Parade

Jack Hanna, who has been vocally supportive of SeaWorld since the incident involving a trainer being killed by a whale at the park, remains positive about the organization.

In an interview with DIS Unplugged, the zookeeper shared his thoughts on the park and animal safety.

On continuing programs at SeaWorld despite trainer deaths:
Does an accident or a death at NASCAR or Indy or even sometimes in certain sports around the world hesitate people in going? The answer’s no. Not just for that, Dawn (Brancheau), whose memorial service is this weekend, gave her life doing something – as her family said, what she loved to do. She loved to educate people. The millions of people this young woman has educated over the years is phenomenal.

On the possibility of future tragedies:
Things happen, yes. Will things happen again? Of course they will. It could be the Columbus Zoo. It could be any zoo throughout the country – the 220 zoos and aquariums. Because we work with safety of our visitor first and safety of our animals – that’s our number one goal, but could something happen? Of course it could happen.

On more government regulations for educational programs at parks like SeaWorld:
Yeah… well, I hope they don’t change anything at SeaWorld. That’s my opinion. I would think people in Washington would have other things to worry about right now. Was Dawn’s death a tragedy? Sure it was. It’s incredible, one death, anybody’s death is a tragedy. But think about other things that are tragedies: the war, the economy, job loss, I could go on and on. You’d think in Washington they’d consider working on things like that that are a little more important than trying to figure out… you know, SeaWorld does it the best there is, period.
