Rory Freedman Former Junk Food “Skinny Bitch”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 in Authors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Sure, she may be the queen of dispensing advice on eating right on a vegan diet, but Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman used to be a junk food lover, as she reveals in this latest video during an interview with PETA.

“I’m the girl who used to eat fast food every single day of my life,” Freedman says.

Veganism should be about health, but that doesn’t mean it always needs to be the brown rice and kale Freedman is getting cozy with in the camera. Veggier versions of desserts and vegetarian fast food restaurants are popping up around the globe.

“Skinny Bitch” Rory Freedman On Drinking Milk

Those darn humans!

They’re so slow to catch on.

Like when it comes to consuming milk, for example, every other animal is so ahead of the game.

Says Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman:

“When we have babies, we breastfeed them, and then at a certain point, we stop. It is exactly the same for cows and every other mammal on the planet. They produce milk when they give birth, they feed their young, and then they stop. We are the only species on the planet that drinks the milk of another species. We are the only species on the planet that drinks milk as adults.”

Rory’s got her theories on why humans are getting slower and slower when it comes to mastering the task of removing lips from nipple juice.

“Because the multi-million dollar dairy industry has convinced us that we need milk for healthy bones,” she said, and gave evidence to the contrary.

“Yale researchers found that countries with the highest dairy and meat intakes also suffer the highest osteoporosis rates.”

Who would have thought that Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman isn’t a big fan of writing.

“I hate writing,” Rory said. “There are a million other things I’d rather be doing. I write because I have to.”

With bestselling books under her belt like Skinny Bitch, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and not to mention Skinny Bastard, Rory sure does a good job at something she’s not crazy about.

But Rory revealed that her motivation for never putting down the pen is the same for pushing away the meat and dairy.

“My unwavering dedication to vegetarianism was solely because of the animals—I could not and would not call myself an “animal lover” while contributing to their torture and slaughter.”

“Because if I feel so strongly about what is happening to animals, and I don’t do anything to help them, who will?”

Rory Freedman “Don’t Steal This Morning Show” On Organic Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 in Authors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Skinny Bitch Rory Freedman sat down with Jessica and Matt (and dog TV anchor) from Don’t Steal This Morning Show to discuss her thoughts on organics, raw food, and healthy eating.

Rory got a call from a viewer who wanted to know if organics were worth the dough.

Here’s what Rory had to say:

“Everybody wants to complain that organic produce is more expensive than conventional produce, but here’s the thing: It’s your body and it’s your health. So out of all the things that you’re going to be spending money on whether it’s like bullshit jewelry or clothes or purses or where you live or something for your apartment or your house, the most important thing you can spend money on is what you put in your body.”

Right on, bitch!

So you want to go vegetarian, but don’t think you can do without the cow every now and then.

How on earth are you going to survive?

Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman suggests replacing your favorite meats with a plant version.

“Have that same meal, but just change it up to something plant based,” Rory said, according to Latimesmagazine.com. “So instead of a steak, have a tofu steak. Use Earth Balance (vegan butter) in your mashed potatoes or almond milk on your cereal.”

Lightlife  Steak Style Strips are good way to pump up your fajita or stir fry.

And seitan makes a wonderful base to bread, fry, saute and season to taste.

Once you’ve created your own animal free Country Fried Steak and Gravy, you’ll wonder why you ever started out with a bloody dish in the first place.

Rory Freedman Advice For Surviving Holiday Carnivorous Cookouts

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 in Authors.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition Opening

The 4th of July holiday is approaching for all our friends in the US, and in many cases, vegetarians and vegans find themselves stuck in a family or friend get together that tries to celebrate by grilling every species, native or not, in the country.

There’s hope for surviving this 4th without going hungry and author of the popular Skinny Bitch series Rory Freedman wrote an article in VegNews magazine for the July/August edition that gave some tips for making it through AND helping to spread some of that cruelty-free awareness while you’re at it.

People are like bags of microwave popcorn, Freedman explains. Some pop right away, some take longer, and some little bastard kernels will make you burn the whole bag and still never pop! Regardless of when and if the kernels decide to pop, all require heat.

Here’s her advice for turning up the heat this holiday weekend:

“Bringing a “Why Vegan?” pamphlet and some veggie “pigs in a blankets” might mean that, even if it’s just for one day at one barbecue, one person will forego eating meat. And hosting your own vegan shindig and inviting all your meathead friends might one day mean the different between a bowlful of kernels and a bowlful of popcorn.”
