PETA Queen, Ingrid Newkirk, Chats With Ecorazzi

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Videos.

PETA’s co-founder and president, Ingrid Newkirk, sat down with green gossip website Ecorazzi.com over a vegan bacon cheeseburger for an interview.

Ingrid’s latest book, The PETA Practical Guide To Animal Rights, has just been released and offers tips for everyday folk to get involved with protecting animals.

Ingrid said one of the most important things an activist can do is to arm themselves with answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

She, like Russell Simmons, also said Barack Obama should stop publicly going out for cheeseburgers and opt for healthier, vegetarian choices instead.

So many are talking. Think Mr. President will get the message?

Watch the video to hear what Ingrid had to say about Michael Vick and other topics.

“I was asked today ‘Are you a vegan or a vegetarian?’ and I said, ‘I’m vegan’ and a lot people call that ‘pure’ vegetarian. I don’t call it that because it sounds as if you have to go to church and you can’t drink and that would cripple my lifestyle terribly because in my work you sometimes need something to comfort you, and it’s not necessarily church.”

“I’m a great subscriber to Chrissie Hynde’s perspective that when you’re working for a social cause, the danger isn’t in going far enough or feeling embarrassed or that it’s in bad taste. You’ve got to really push the envelope. Animals are in desperate trouble in the fur farms, in the laboratories.”

Ingrid Newkirk Talks Michael Vick, Breast Milk Flavored Ice Cream

We just found a fantastic Time Magazine article on Ingrid Newkirk where she answers 10 questions from people all around the country about PETA, vegetarianism, and animal rights, just to name a few.

Some highlights include her feelings about Michael Vick, who was sentenced to prison for his role in dog fighting.

“I have spoken to Michael, and I know he’s contrite. I believe when we see him emerge from jail that he’s going to have a strong message for inner-city youth,” she said.

She also addresses that ridiculous idea that Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream should start using breast milk in their products after discovering a Swiss restaurant had done the same.

“It isn’t very feasible at all, but it was great fun to suggest it to Ben & Jerry’s, who also knew it was a joke. What was serious was that television stations listened to our reasons why making anything out of cow’s milk is unkind. Calves are taken away from their mothers and used for veal. We drink the milk meant for those little calves.”

Oh, yes, of course…We TOTALLY knew it was a joke.

Go here to read the rest of the questions and learn how Ingrid and the folks at PETA have a million dollar reward to the first scientist who can come up with in vitro meat, meat grown from cells from a small group of animals in the laboratory, which means no more killing and more cleanliness. Quick, grab your geek friends from college and high school and find some way to convince them to do this and split the reward with you.
