Shanghai Tang And Kevin Bacon Celebrate The October Issue Of Gotham Magazine

Animal lovers across the nation are disappointed that the Obamas have chosen to go with a dog from a kennel versus a shelter due to allergies in the family.

While some feel this is a setback for rescue animals, we’re ecstatic to bring you the news that another shelter dog has indeed been given its earthy wings and will be living high with singer-songwriter Nellie McKay.

McKay performed at VegFest in Denver this past weekend and Susanna Speier, who blogs as the Denver Sustainable City Examiner, had a chance to watch her that evening, where it was revealed Nellie has recently adopted a pit bull.

“In effort to end this on a somewhat brightish not, I shall also inform you that Nellie McKay is now a proud new parent. Although, Denver’s strict pit bull regulations, precluded the golden hearted singer/songwriter from being able to bring him to Denver with her, his newly adapted presence was with her in spirit, throughout the night. And yes, in case you are wondering, Nellie McKay chose to rescue a shelter dog.”

Sweet deal. Karma works in ways you couldn’t imagine. If you’re interested in adding more magic to the shelter pet pot, visit the Humane Society or rescue shelter in your area.

Joe Biden Gets A+ On Humane Society Pro-Animal Report Card

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Politicians.

Biden swears-in Kirk as US Trade Rep in Washington

The Humane Society Legislative Fund has a list just like Santa that its checking more than twice. And every nice or naughty politician will have to answer how their actions contributed to animal welfare.

The Humane Scorecard Booklet is designed to let everyone know where politicians stand on animal rights.

The Scorecard currently shows the 110th Congress “made significant progress on animal protection legislation, including banning the import of puppies from foreign breeding mills, strengthening the federal law on animal fighting, and providing safeguards against tainted ingredients in pet food.”

Several government officials received a score of a “1oo+” including  Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Diane Feinstein (Calif.), John Kerry (Mass.), Carl Levin (Mich.), and vice president Joe Biden.

Politicians earn points on the scorecard through several measures involving either voting or taking action against animal rights. Those earning the highest ratings of 100+  were the prime sponsors of pro-animal legislation that became law. Points can also be earned through co-sponsorship of bills and boosting funding for the enforcement of animal welfare laws.

Biden racked up points for co-sponsoring bills against animal fighting and horse slaughter.

Check to see how your favorite politician scored this time around on The Humane Scorecard.

Paul Harvey Made A “Good Day” For Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Radio Hosts.

harveypaulPaul Harvey, news commenter and talk radio host, recently passed at the young age of 90.

He became famous over the years for his sign-off, “Paul Harvey…Good Day.”

Many may not know how he made a good day for animals.

Actively involved with many animal treatment issues, such as puppy mills, animal fighting, seal clubbing, and factory farming, Harvey personally worked with all six CEO’s of the Humane Society of the United States.

Two years before the Federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Act was enacted, Harvey began reporting on decisions the House Agricultural Committee made in regard to animal slaughter. After visiting a slaughterhouse, he urged for the end to some of its practices through his syndicated newspaper column.

He also endorsed ballads protecting farm animals, such as the recent Proposition 2 in California and Proposition 204 in  Arizona.

Ellen And Portia To Receive Wyler Award By Humane Society

35th Annual People's Choice Awards - Backstage

Quite possibly Hollywood’s newest vegan couple, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored for their efforts to improve care for animals at the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards next month.

The Wyler Award, named after the late Genesis Award founder, Gretchen Wyler, is given to celebrities or other public figures who have made the most noise in standing up for the better treatment of animals.

Looks like they’ve made the right choice. Where do we start?

Portia and Ellen both became vegans this year, saying no to every animal product, whether flesh or a byproduct. They both were active in getting the word out on Prop 2, the measure which passed in California to allow certain farm animals to move around freely.

They even share their lifestyle with people who are fortunate enough to be in their presence. The wedding reception menu was completely vegan. Ellen has given out vegan items quite a few times on her television show.

Wow. That’s a lot of hard work, guys. Have a cold one on us. You deserve it!

Meatless Mouthful: Vegan Moby Doesn’t Judge Meat Eaters

2008 Woodies Awards are presented in New York

“When I was about 18 years old, I had this realization — I’ve always loved animals, I love my dog, I love my cat — and I had this simple realization that I wouldn’t want to be involved with anything that would cause my dog to suffer, therefore I shouldn’t be involved in anything that causes other animals to suffer. That led me to be a vegan.”

“I do try to be a nonjudgmental vegan, so if someone chooses to eat meat that’s their choice, just for myself and keeping my conscience relatively clear, I choose not to.”

—-Moby, in an interview with Pelly Twins. He does a lot of work with the Humane Society because he thinks they’re, “really effective legislators.”
