5 Ways To Throw An Awesome Garden Party

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 30th, 2013 in Food & Drink, Gardening.

Having a party at any time of year can be a lot of fun, but during the summer, it is possible to extend that party out into the garden. In the hot sun, plenty of cool drinks and nibbles can be the perfect way to have a good time, and by inviting friends and relatives it is possible to extend those good times and turn them into a proper celebration. Whether you want to have a few friends over for drinks because the weather is warm and your garden looks great, or if you have a particular reason to throw a party, a garden-themed party can be the ideal setting. There are several ways in which you can throw your party.

1) A barbecue

This is the ultimate type of garden party, and one that everyone is familiar with. The secret here is not to allow the party to go on for too long before food is served; it is also a good idea to make sure that the food is well cooked. Keep your guests cool by holding the party under outdoor patio umbrellas, so they can choose whether to stand out in the sun, or sit in the shade. These types of garden party are always popular, and they can be a simple but effective way of making sure that everyone has a great time.

2) Night Party

The hot summer days mean that the light lasts longer, and it is always possible to use low-level lighting so that guests can find their way up and down the garden. These parties are great, because they allow you to hold a party without the risks of heatstroke or burning which might occur during the day. Make sure to have a fire pit or other device to ensure that guests don’t get cold.

Michelle Obama invited local school children to harvest vegetables from the garden when she was caught holding a prized possession from the patch.

The sweet potato was picked at the beginning of prime season (October through January) and this Thanksgiving favorite in the U.S. is sure to please White House guests in some dish soon.

Sometimes mistaken for yams, sweet potatoes are actually an entirely different vegetable, a root of the vine in the morning glory family that dates back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian records.

Steve Jobs Plans Vegetable Garden In New Home

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Gardening, Research + Science, Tech.

Steve Jobs will have his own private, vegetable garden at his new pad, reports Cult of Mac, which also has a layout of the 5,000 square feet design on its website.

Gizmodo gave the intricate details:

“According to these initial designs, Jobs intends to populate the 6 acres with an assortment of indigenous flora; a simple three-car garage; a modest 5 bedroom home with plenty of windows and decks; a network of lighted stone walkways; and even a private vegetable garden. Everything is neat, tight, pragmatic, and in its place.”

This leaves more questions to be answered, of course. What vegetables will be included? Will the garden be organic? Does Jobs have a staff to tend to the veggies or does he have a natural green thumb himself?

It may awhile before the public learns these answers, but there is information available on why people garden in the first place, according to a survey by the National Gardening Association called “Impact of Home and Community Gardening in America.”

Kristen Bell "Shape" Magazine

Kristen Bell is on the cover of the September 2010 issue of Shape.

The magazine interviewed the vegetarian actress who gave her 30 rules to live by that include growing her own organic herbs and vegetables, using eco-friendly handbags and avoiding dairy with the occasional “cheat.”

Tip 24 is to “splurge wisely,” and for Bell, that means spending her money on sustainable fashion for a good cause.

“I don’t mind paying a bit more for things made with sustainable materials,” Bell said. “I love FEED bags by Ellen Gustafson and Lauren Bush [from $60; feedprojects.com]. They’re eco-friendly, and most of the proceeds go to feeding and educating children around the world.”

Move over Michelle Obama!

The First Lady of the White House isn’t the only woman to show off her home grown greens.

Jennifer Taylor, the actress who is Charlie Sheen‘s love interest on Two and a Half Men, has revealed to EcoStiletto she tries to be greener by tending to an organic garden, which makes it so much easier to eat better at home.

“It takes a conscious effort because it’s so much easier to cook crap that’s nowhere near green. It takes a lot of effort. I’m a big planner and list maker. I live out of my little agenda. I prepare for dinners a couple of days in advance because I know that I can’t just grab something off of the shelf as I’m going home.”

“I think it’s important to eat clean and simply and just do something. Gardening, recycling, carrying reusable water bottles—every little thing helps. If everybody did one little thing it would really help.”

Need some advice for growing your own?

Jennifer gives the following tips:

  1. Wear gloves. I always forget.
  2. Use your coffee grinds and pickle juice as fertilizer. Gardenias love pickle juice!
  3. Soapy water in a spray bottle is a great natural pesticide for your fruits and vegetables.
  4. Don’t be afraid to prune a lot. The plant will grow back bigger and stronger.
  5. Get the kids involved. We let Jake pick his own seed packets, and he’s responsible for watering his plants. He recently planted a sunflower and was amazed at how big it grew!

Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project 8th Annual Spring Picnic

Bette Midler‘s New York Restoration Project (NYRP) was set to open the Target Bronx Community Garden today.

The NYRP is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and revitalizing parks, community gardens and public space in New York City.

The Target Bronx Community Garden connects the already existing Anderson Community Garden with the adjoining Woodycrest Community Garden to create an even bigger multi-use space.

“Once again we are thrilled with the work that Target and Sean Conway have done to make this garden a vital part of the neighborhood,” said Bette Midler, Founder of NYRP. “We applaud the ongoing commitment that Target has to underserved communities. Like NYRP, they recognize that each time they help create a beautiful oasis in a neighborhood, they invest in the future of the whole city.”

From Looktothestars.org:

Combining two adjacent properties provided the unique opportunity to create one large multi-functional open space not often found in urban neighborhoods. From the entrance at Woodycrest Avenue, garden visitors will pass through a small grove of trees which commemorate the lives of those lost in a tragic neighborhood fire in 2007. Next visitors will enter into a large open area which contains a large grass space for celebrations and gatherings, an outdoor kitchen where visitors can prepare meals al fresco, an elevated wooden sundeck, newly planted fruit trees and a berry patch, as well as raised open plots for community vegetable gardening. A third feature of the garden is the renovated rock outcropping which highlights the rugged natural beauty of this Bronx neighborhood. The elevated slope faces the community’s public elementary school on Anderson Avenue and will provide a welcoming invitation for neighborhood children to explore the outdoors in their own back yard.

Green space brightens any neighborhood and encourages people to get out and get healthy.

Hats off to Bette and the NYRP!
