“Baboons are highly social and extremely intelligent animals that do not belong in circuses where they are forced to live in cramped quarters and suffer physical abuse and neglect at the hands of underqualified trainers and circus operators. Nothing could be more inhumane and callous than forcing animals to endure a life of suffering simply for human amusement and profit. The Bolivian Government has set an excellent example with this progressive decision and I hope that Bolivia’s actions will influence other countries to implement similar legislation.”

Bob Barker, vegetarian and animal welfare activist who provided financial support to move Tilin, an 18-year-old male Hamadryras baboon, from a circus in Bolivia to an animal sanctuary. Bolivia passed the world’s first ban of animals in circuses last year, giving operators a year to comply and find new homes for the animals.

Bob Barker made an appearance on Mike Huckabee‘s talk show, The Huckabee Show, along with Chuck Swift, captain of the MV Bob Barker, the anti-whaling ship named after the former Price Is Right host.

Both men discuss international whaling treaties and Sea Shepherd’s work. Barker says the goal is to sink the Japanese whalers economically and claims this past year was especially successful because the whalers lost money.

Barker is big supporter of Sea Shepherd, having donated several million dollars to the cause.

Bob Barker “Larry King Live” On Whaling (Video)

Bob Barker‘s visit to Larry King Live was, as expected, phenomenal!

Hard to believe the octogenarian is keeping a pace most men half his age would struggle to compete with.

Barker sat alongside Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson and explained why he gave $5 million to fight whale harpooning.

Harper and other activists probably breathed a sign of relief when the International Whaling Commission recently rejected a much publicized proposal to turn over a 24 year moratorium on commercial whaling.

From now until July 4th, Bob Barker has agreed to match all donations in PETA’s drive to raise $250,000 by that date, which will go towards an even bigger challenge of eventually raising $2 million.

PETA writes on the donation site:

“We know our online donors are some of the most generous and rapid responders to these challenges, and we decided to start with this group of loyal supporters first in our attempt to raise the full challenge amount.”

Standard gift suggestions are given as $25, $50 and $100, but there is an optional box for those who wish to give other amounts.

The vegetarian former Price is Right host gave money to help renovate a building for the organization’s Los Angeles headquarters and said it was the most, “effective and most productive of all animal rights or animal welfare groups in the world.”

Dedication Ceremony for PETA's Bob Barker Building

“About 20 years ago I was chairman of Be Kind to Animals Week in L.A. I was invited by different organizations to participate in their activities. As I did, I began to become aware of the terrible exploitation of animals in the world and felt compelled to try to rectify the situation. And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.”

Bob Barker, on how he became involved in animal rights, especially by donating money to various organizations, including setting up an Animal Law program at a university and helping PETA renovate a building for their Los Angeles headquarters. Recently, lion cubs freed under the new Bolivian law banning animals in circuses were sent to a refuge made possible by a generous donation from Barker.

Lion Yawning

Several lion cubs freed under the new law banning animals in circuses in Bolivia will make their new home at the Performing Animal Welfare Society in California that has received generous donations from Bob Barker, vegetarian and former Price Is Right host and animal activist.

Last year, Bolivia banned animals from circuses following undercover investigation by London based group Animal Defenders International, which uncovered severe abuse of the animals. Circus operators were given a year to comply after the law took effect, and groups are trying to find ways to rescue the animals before they are “discarded” by handlers in a less humane manner.

Bob Barker–PETA Most Effective, Productive Animal Group (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 15th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Videos.

Last week, Bob Barker cut the red ribbon at the ceremony to celebrate PETA establishing their Los Angeles location.

Barker donated $2.5 million to help get the building started, and PETA is looking for a few more (million) dollars to create the best environment for their California headquarters.

“I think PETA is the most effective and most productive of all animal rights or animal welfare groups in the world. And no job is too small or too big.”

Sounds like Barker helped make an enormous task more manageable.

Best of luck to PETA in their new home!
