In-N-Out Drops Beef Supplier, Needs Veggie Burger On Menu

Fast food chain In-N-Out has cut ties with one of its beef suppliers, Central Valley Meat, after the company was found to have violated animal welfare standards. That’s certainly a step in the right direction. But animal rights activist and eco-friendly entrepreneur Ari Solomon thinks In-N-Out can do better by putting a vegetarian burger on its menu.

Valentina Zelyaeva is a Russian model who’s appeared on several international issues of Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazarre.

Although not a vegetarian, Zelyaeva tries to follow a raw diet as much as possible and takes to vegan smoothies like she takes to the runway.

She recently got together with some writers from New York Magazine‘s “The Cu”t for a mission to concoct a drink made from almond milk fit for a supermodel or a cubicle worker.

USA Today’s Whitney Mattheson was surprised at the content of Amanda Cohen‘s Dirt Candy. She expected a traditional book filled with recipes and a few cute cartoons. She was pleasantly surprised to learn the book is a mix of both, including some facts and history more exciting than licking a spoon covered with wasabi like the “scandalous history of the graham cracker.”

Obama School Lunch Changes Gives More Vegetarian Opportunities

USDA Nutritional Guidelines

This fall, school children across the country will have access to more fresh fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and more vegetarian options as part of the revamp of the USDA Nutritional Guidelines for School Lunches. The new standards are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law by President Obama.

In addition, an initiative called a “friendlier food environment” will hopefully make things a lot easier for vegetarian school children, allowing them to access plant-based items like tofu and legumes, according to Agriculture Under Secretary for Food Kevin Concannon.

Carrie Underwood spent a few moments at the Country Music Association to celebrate the success of her new single, “Good Girl” from her latest album, Blown Away.

A Taste of Country reports Underwood enjoyed her party at the CMA with “peppers stuffed with eggplant bruschetta and fried stuffed Roma tomatoes with a corn salsa.”

Guitarist Rickey Medlocke said, “You gotta understand something: There’s different BBQ for different sections of the South. Texas has their own kind, Memphis has their own kind, Florida has their own kind, and the Carolinas, too.”

So which part of the South has the best vegetarian BBQ? Johnny van Zant‘s daughter would probably know.

White House Kids State Dinner Winner BBQ Chickpea Burger Story

Michelle Obama invited kids from each of the 50 states and their families to the first ever kids White House State Dinner. The children were winners in the First Lady’s Healthy Lunch Contest, where they were encouraged to create recipes from whole foods, emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables and grains.

One attendee and winner, 8-year-old Finwe Wiedenhoeft from Mineral Point, Wisconsin, has a terrific flexitarian story behind the family’s winning Barbecue Cheddar Chickpea Burger recipe.
