Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore delivers a speech at the Montreal Millennium Summit

Al Gore recently spoke to a group of 800 college and high school students at Cal State Monterey Bay in the final series of installments in the Panetta Institute for Public Policy lecture series.

As expected, he commented on the recent Gulf Coast oil spill, but added that coal-fire plants produce similar environmental damage on a regular basis, putting three times as many pollutants into the air.

“Oil you can see,” Gore said. “CO2 is invisible, odorless and tasteless – invisible to the economy because it has no price tag on it.”

One student asked the former Vice President if he has stopped eating meat after learning of the environmental impact of the livestock industry.

His response was “no,” but that he had cut back.

It would be interesting to know how some meat reducers are performing their stunts.

Sure, many say that are eating less meat, but does that mean that are following Meatless Mondays?

Or only eating meat on the weekends?

We need more details on how the flexitarians plan their diets, so others can learn by example!

Meat eaters who will forgo the hamburger on most days and opt for the pasta with “wheat” balls are on the rise.

According to a new study discussed in The Mirror, record numbers of flexitarians, or people who eat vegetarian sometimes are forming.

Sales of  products such as fake meats have doubled over the last decade in the UK, according to the Vegetarian Society.

“The real growth area is in ‘meat reducers’ – those who haven’t given up meat completely but who are making a conscious effort to eat less of it,” said Su Taylor, a spokesperson for the company.

There are different ways to incorporate a part-time vegetarian lifestyle.

Treehugger founder Graham Hill follows a weekday vegetarian plan, while author Mark Bittman recommends a “vegan until 6” deal.

Still, others eliminate some animal products entirely, like red meat and dairy, replacing them with plant based alternatives.

Michael Pollan has been named of the most influential people of 2010 on Time Magazine‘s annual list.

Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, who’s criticized the unfit conditions for humans and animals in factory farms, can still be considered a vegetarian’s ally, despite his reluctance to go any further than advocating less meat.

Alice Waters has written his bio:

“Unwilling to accept the food industry’s account of where beef comes from, Michael bought a steer in Kansas to follow the life cycle of a kernel of corn from the laboratory to the feed bin to the restaurant where the beef is served. It’s a harrowing tale, and since the moment I heard him tell it, I have not served corn-fed beef of any kind. I was Pollanized — and I am not alone.”

Mark Bittman Shares Sushi Minus The Seafood Ideas

Mark Bittman is famous for his flexitarian approach to eating and in a recent column in the New York Times, Bittman shares with readers how to make sushi without the fish.

Sushi without the seafood is not only vegetarian friendly, but budget friendly and Bittman points this out in the article.

“Think about it: sushi without seafood, sushi without restaurants and sushi without spending $80 a person. It’s an appealing option,” he writes.

Vegetarians already know that nori seaweed strips make great wraps and although not every non seafood option Bittman gives is vegetarian, there is an abundance of vegetables and vegetarian protein to try like fried tofu, raw or seared tofu, avocado, mushrooms and eggplants.

Bittman says that when buying nori, look for sheets with darker colors and fewer holes.

And eat right away for a crispy sushi experience–as soon as nori touches moisture, it begins to soften.

Ernie Harwell May Have Been A Flexitarian

Harwell dies at the age of 92l

Hall of fame broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers baseball team, Ernie Harwell, has passed at the age of 91.

According to the Windsor Star, Harwell ate a mostly vegetarian diet, but would indulge in the occasional lamb at a Greek restaurant in Detroit.

Argh!

Out of all the occasional meat meals, baby animals has to be the worst!

Thoughts go out to Harwell’s family and friends.

Kristin Bauer from HBO’s True Blood is so close to being vegetarian, we’re going to award her an Honorable Mention.

The actress recently attended the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine’s 25th Anniversary Gala where she revealed she only eats meat about twice a year.

“I find it hard to find the words on how much it pains me,” Kristin said regarding how some animals are abused or mistreated.

The two times she does eat meat are at Christmas gatherings with the family.

“But I buy the free range meat at least,” she added.

Looking forward to the day when Kristin announces she’s making a seitan loaf or Tofurky for the next family gathering.
