Mos Def Offers Hummus, Guacamole To Little Mos Def

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, June 8th, 2009 in Children, Food & Drink, Male Singers.

Premiere of Cadillac Records in New York

Mos Def’s got a new album, The Ecstatic, coming out tomorrow.

The hip hopper who’s real name is Dante Terrell Smith, sat down for some chit-chat with USAtoday.com and he brought along his son Fidel for the interview, where he enticed him with the thought of ordering hummus or guacamole.

Mos Def is a vegetarian, and from the sound of it, looks like he’s trying to bring Fidel up that way too.

Mos fantastic!

Mos Def likes to skateboard around his neighborhood, something he picked up from comedian Dave Chappelle.

“I love my decks,” he said. “It’s a great way to discover a neighborhood and keep fit. And it’s really Zen.”

Nicole Richie Insists On Organic Fruits And Vegetables

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 16th, 2009 in Actresses, Children, Food & Drink.

Esprit Santa Monica Grand Opening CelebrationLight years away from her past party life, Nicole Richie is living cleaner and healthier than ever.

She insists one-year old daughter Harlow and partner Joel Madden only consume organic fruits and vegetables. When she prepares meals for her family, it usually consists of lots of salads and vegetable stir fries.

Not surprising, considering Joel is vegetarian.

With Nicole’s new love of all things organic and veggie (she’s even growing her own organic, vegetable garden in the backyard of her home in Hollywood), and a man who doesn’t touch meat, will Nicole finally give in and go veg altogether? It surely would make things more convenient and healthier for the whole fam.

And there’s no better way to bring in expectant baby #2 in than starting it off with a plant based diet.

Best of luck to Nicole and her healthier adventures!

Ziggy Marley performing at The RoxyWhat’s a parent to do? You’re a vegetarian, trying to bring your kids up that way, but all the screaming munchkin is asking for is MEAT.

If you’re Ziggy Marley, you give in from time to time.

And Erykah Badu thought she had it bad just because her daughter wouldn’t stop begging for vegan snacks.

Ziggy, musician and son of legendary Bob Marley, spoke with Celebrity Baby Blog and said that although he is very picky about food and tries to keep his children on a vegetarian diet like he is, sometimes he gives in.

“I’m kind of cool — I let them eat some meat,” Ziggy said. “It’s all good.”

There’s always the debate over whether to raise a child vegetarian from birth.

Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis won’t do it. Diane Keaton’s not too enthusiastic either

Some say it isn’t fair to enforce any lifestyle on a child until it’s old enough to decide. Looks like Ziggy’s kids know what they want. But should he give it to them?

With the range of fake meats on the market, there’s nothing little Daniel, Justice, Zuri, Judah, and Gideon can’t ask for that doesn’t come in an animal-free variety.

What do you guys think? Is it “all good” for a vegetarian parent to give into a child’s meat wishes occasionally?

We knew we were going to love Biz Stone once we found out he was vegan. But who knew we’d be jumping and cheering for the Twitter co-founder this much.

Biz is following Wyntergrace Williams‘ lead and lobbying Congress to ensure vegetarian meals are included in school lunches.

Biz sent a letter to Rep. George Miller, chair of the House Education and Labor Committee to support the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act, which would add a vegetarian friendly option to children’s school lunches.

It took a little more than 140 characters for Biz to express himself, but we think he’s done it well based on this excerpt.

“Hundreds of thousands of students across the country don’t eat meat, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. However, these young vegetarians often can’t find healthy, meatless meals in the school cafeteria … Even students who aren’t vegetarian would benefit from having low-fat, high-fiber vegetarian options.”

The video recorded by Wyntergrace Williams has aired as a commercial in Rep. George Miller’s district.

Erykah Badu performs at the 40th New Orleans Jazz and Heritage FestivalAs a child, what snack did you love so much, you were willing to forgo an entire month of Saturday morning Smurfs?

Erykah Badu’s daughter, Puma, doesn’t seem to be that picky about her favorite munchie. As long as it’s vegan.

Erykah recently made a CelebrityTweet:

“puma keeps asking for vegan snack after snack …i oughta do like my mama and tell her , “.. gone . gone and eat em all then they’ll be gone.”

With all the unhealthy snacks kids ask for these days (chips, soda, cookies, oh my), Erykah should at least be thankful little Puma knows what good!

Of course, having a mom who grows her own herbs and is so big on holistic health doesn’t hurt.

Does your child have a favorite vegan snack you wouldn’t dare leave off the grocery list? Are you a big kid who has serious problems parting with your vegan comfort food?

Wyntergrace Williams’ Video For Vegetarian School Lunches

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 4th, 2009 in Children, Food & Drink, Videos.

Last week, this young lady went to Capitol Hill to ask Congress to get their act together and make sure vegetarian lunches are on the menu at public schools.

“Some of us don’t eat right,” says Wyntergrace Wiliams, daughter of Montel Williams. “Fast food, junk food-sometimes even our school lunches have too much fat and cholesterol.”

Now you can embed this video and make it spread faster than an Internet hoax to spread the news on getting everybody to sign the petition to give kids healthier school lunches in the classroom.

Because the only thing worse than a bad grade on a report card is mystery meat on your plate.

Wyntergrace Williams, Montel Williams’ daughter, is inviting the Obama girls to get in on the vegetarian school lunch action!

Not long ago, we brought you the news that Wyntergrace is urging everyone to sign a petition asking congress to ensure more vegetarian options are available in school lunches.

This week, she’ll be headed to Washington, D.C. to ask Congress to change the Child Nutrition act to require public schools to include healthy, vegetarian options. She’s also written a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama in hopes they will help her with her cause.

“My name is Wyntergrace and I’m a big fan of yours. It seems that we have a few things in common. We all love dogs, live on the East Coast, have fantastic moms and maternal grand moms and both of our dads are quite famous. In our household we also eat healthy foods and I am working on a school project to get healthier foods in schools across the country. I would love for you to join my campaign and sign my petition and encourage other students and families to follow our own and respective families’ lead.”

“The problem is that many schools do not offer enough healthful choices. This is especially true when it comes to vegetarian meals. A lot of us ask for vegetarian meals out of compassion for animals, like I do, or because of concerns about health or the environment, but all students would benefit from having a variety of healthy options, and other plant-based meals available.”

Jessica Alba and her family go for a walk in Sunset Plaza

Jessica Alba recently appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to discuss her first Easter with daughter Honor Marie Warren.

What’s so cool about Jessica’s first Easter with Honor is that she tried to keep things vegan!

According to Celebritybabyblog.com, the cupcakes were “organic, dairy-free, egg-free cupcakes.”

Jessica described the cupcakes as “awesome” and “moist,” but the icing left more to be desired.

“The icing was horrible, so I got the icing from the can,” Jessica told Jay.

You can watch the video of Jessica telling Jay about her Easter icing experience.

Aw, we’ll forgive you Jess. We’re just so proud you attempted vegan cupcakes. Wonder if this means Jessica will be doing more vegan cooking in the future?

Have you had a bad vegan icing experience? Cherrybrook Kitchen has some awesome vegan frosting guaranteed to make your next vegan cupcake experience NOT sucky.
