Leilani Munter Assembling Her Eco-Dream Team For 2009

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 29th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Environment-Eco-Green.

Global Green USAs 6th Annual Pre-Oscar Party - Red Carpet

When vegetarian professional race car driver and environmentalist Leilani Munter first started talking about environmental issues on her racing website, she got mixed reactions.

Some were excited to embrace the discussion of being eco-friendly. Others said she was “brainwashed by Al Gore,” because she promoted An Inconvenient Truth.

But the important thing was at least they were talking about it, something that wasn’t happening before.

Like it or not, race car driving is one of the biggest spectator sports in the country and to leave millions of fans in the dark about what’s going on with the earth would just be plain irresponsible.

She recently appeared on NPR, discussing her 2009 plans to put together an Eco-Dream Team where the race cars will show a public service message to race fans, promoting greener actions, such as using energy saving light bulbs. She also wants to set up eco-education centers at the racetracks.

Mac Danzig: How It All Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, December 27th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

Ultimate Fighting Champion Mac Danzig was tired of eating chicken and fish all the time. He wanted to go vegan, but was unsure of how it would affect his performance. So he decided to wait until he finished his athletic career. But an experiment before a Pro Boxing match in 2004 showed he recovered better than he did when eating chicken and fish.  Being the man of reason he is, he continued doing what the data showed was best.

And that’s how it all vegan.

In this video, Mac talks about his diet, his love for Canada (he’s not trying to kiss ass, he assures), and other vegetarian/vegan athletes.

“I felt a responsibility to do something about the impact I have on the environment because of my racing career. I am speaking out about my actions in hopes of bringing awareness to race fans and the racing community. Carbon offsetting is not the solution to climate change, but I had to do something about my unavoidable emissions.”

Terence Gerchberg was the “veggie half” of the Amazing Race couple Terence and Sarah this past season. During a challenge, Terence, a vegetarian for 15 years, tried to eat sheep butt to further the couple in the competition. It was the most delicious meal he ever had. Ha, just kidding. It was nasty, he barfed, they fell behind and were eliminated during that episode. He agreed to talk to Vegetarian Star about his experience on the show as well as his personal experience with vegetariansim.

On the eating challenge where he had to eat sheep butt

I wish more than anything I would have said this: “I will not compromise my beliefs.” And turned around and walked out. I didn’t say that. Am I mad at myself for that? I’m mad at many things. They probably wouldn’t have even conveyed that because they definitely portrayed me as being a bit of a little whiner on the show. I’m really not that big of a complainer. Being a competitive person, for a million dollars, would you have tried to eat sheep’s butt?

I could not chew it. I was gagging. It was literally repulsive. And Sarah was like, “Eat the potatoes.” It wasn’t potatoes. It was chunks of ass. It was fat from the [sheep] ass. It was seriously the most repulsive thing I’ve ever in my entire life tried to eat. What bothered me about the whole process was in front of us, there was like a cow’s head or lamb’s head and they were peeling the meat off of the head and eating it in front of us.

And if you look at the video, I’m throwing it up outside. (Take a look at the video after the jump below.)

Were you aware during the time you were chosen or anywhere in the process before you had the eating challenge that there were different types of eating challenges? Did you ask ahead of time if you would have to eat cow testicles or something disgusting like that?

We’ve [he and Sarah] watched previous episodes, so in previous episodes there was a meat eating challenge. They knew from my application, it clearly says, she’s kosher and it clearly says that I’ve never in my life hid the fact that I’m a vegetarian. I clearly and proudly state that I’m a vegetarian at all times. I’m the vegetarian that asks, “Ok, is your veggie burger cooked on the same grill as your meat? I don’t do that. Like, is there beef stock?” I take pride in it-I know about the gelatin. Certain cheeses are vegetarian. I really am an educated vegetarian. I’m competing at a fairly competitive level (Terence runs marathons) without eating any meat. There’s so much that the world has to offer in terms of grains. Every once in awhile I do have some dairy and eggs, but as a whole I can practically be vegan. I take complete pride and it’s something that I’ve never shied away from. So they did know it. They asked, “What would you do if you had to eat meat?” I said, “You’re asking me a tough question;-I don’t want to compromise my beliefs.”

Boxing Promoter Frank Warren’s Bad Meat Market Experience

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 8th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Scott Harrison v Nicky Cook Press Conference

What does a British boxing promoter who grew up in the Islington part of London in the UK and a drummer in an indie rock/pop punk band from Chicago, Illinois in the United States have in common? Both had a bad experience working around raw meat that turned them vegetarian.

Frank Warren has promoted some heavyweights and heavy names in the boxing sport, including Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton, although his ties with the two were eventually severed. He’s recently signed on some fresh British faces including Beijing gold medallist James DeGale, world champion Frankie Gavin, and Billy Joe Saunders.

At only 15 years of age, he quit school and went to work in a meat market at Smithfield, which incidentally, is not only a meat market area in London, but is also historically known for the executions of heretics and political opponents centuries ago. Looks like animals and humans got bad deals here!

He’s been a vegetarian ever since.

His story is similar to Andy Mrotek, drummer for The Academy Is, who’s experience working as a butcher at Pick N’ Save turned him vegetarian.

Guess these guys got to peer into those glass walls Paul McCartney wants everybody to look through.

San Diego Chargers Have Most Veggie Friendly NFL Stadium

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

NFL: NOV 23 Colts at Chargers

If you’re a vegetarian Chargers fan, congratulations! You can enjoy the game live without having to worry about munching on peanuts or a bland protein bar you brought from home.

Qualcomm Stadium, home to the San Diego Chargers, has been named the friendliest vegetarian NFL stadium by PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

You can stock up before the game and eat until your veggie heart’s content on bean burritos, veggie sushi rolls, vegetable wraps, veggie hot dogs, and Gardenburgers.

Coming in at second place is the McAfee Coliseum, where the Oakland Raiders do their thing on home turf. Choose from veggie hot dogs, veggie burgers, and fruit cups for dessert.

The city of Philadelphia took first place this year for the best veggie baseball stadium, but they’ve come in 3rd place for football with the Eagles’ Lincoln Financial Field offering veggie hot dogs and veggie burgers.

Finally, we all can be ready for some football!

Visit PETA’s blog for a complete list of NFL stadiums that made the top cut.

Terence Gerchberg’s not the only reality TV contestant who felt the pain of being a vegetarian forced to eat meat in an eating competition. Timmy Mallet, a contestant on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! was eliminated from the show after he lost a challenge to fellow contestant Brian Paddick.

The challenge involved comsuming drinks containing blended kangaroo penis and testicles. Not your average margarita.

“It was an eating trial. I wasn’t expecting that. I’m a vegetarian. How could I cope?” he said, accroding to the Uk Mirror.

“Am I comfortable having to consume living creatures? The answer is no, of course I’m not comfortable. But I am a fighter and I believe you’ve got to be in it to win it.”
