Is hummus thicker than water? Vegetarian Bryce Dallas Howard recently defended Christian Bale, who is also veg, on recent allegations that he created a hostile environment on The Terminator by throwing temper tantrums on the set. Bale has been making headlines lately for an alleged assault on his mother and sister.

Howard, who played Bale’s wife, insisted he was nothing but a gentleman and suggested the role he played may have caused him to be misunderstood.

“This man is just a gentleman, an amazing person. I adore him and I just can’t wait to be with him next week,” said Howard.

“(His character) John Connor is a very intense character… and so misinterpretations could happen.”

Both Howard and Bale are vegetarians. Howard was introduced to veganism by Joaquin Phoenix, her co-star on The Village. Phoenix apparently showed her a documentary on animal cruelty called Earthlings. Howard reported in 2006 that she switched to vegetarian in order to help her boost her amino acid levels in preparation for pregnancy.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, July 25th, 2008 in Actors.

Premiere of Universal's

Russell Brand will be hosting MTV’s Music Video Awards this year. He spoke to E!Online about some of his plans for the show on September 7th:

“I’m planning to have lesbian kisses with Britney and Madonna individually,” Brand said. “It’s not going to be easy what with my genitals, but God, I will try.”

Although the Jonas Brothers will also be making an appearance, Brand joked they really should be in bed by that hour.

“We may have to cancel them, because I don’t think the show will be early enough for them,” he said. “Those boys will be sent promptly to bed if I come across them.”

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor was named one of Peta Europe’s Sexiest Vegetarians in 2007.

Bear Grylls Semi-Vegetarian At Home

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 in Actors.

What is a semi-vegetarian? And what does a semi-vegetarian eat at home? These questions burn away at our inquisitive minds, but we do know that these part-time vegetarians are confusing.

Bear Grylls is known on television for showing the world how you can survive in the most horrid conditions with ways such as extracting water from animal feces and gnawing down on raw flesh straight from the wilderness. However, at home, he admits to less carnivorous (and grossorous) eating habits.

The details of his semi-vegetarianism remain unclear, but anything beats his television diet of carcass surrounded by flies.

Tobey Maguire Close To Being Vegan But Not Quite There

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 in Actors.

Tobey Maguire once spoke to Parade Magazine about being many things, including a gambler, an art collector, and a vegetarian who’s almost vegan:

“Actually, I’m close to being a vegan, but I’m not one, technically. I don’t eat eggs, or nearly any dairy—no cheese or milk. I do eat honey, and a piece of milk chocolate here and there…. It’s never really been that hard for me. I’ve never had any desire to eat meat. In fact, when I was a kid I would have a really difficult time eating meat at all. It had to be the perfect bite, with no fat or gristle or bone or anything like that.”

Has Vegetarian Batman Gone A Little Batty?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 in Actors.

So you’ve probably already heard the news about Christian Bale’s arrest for assaulting his mother and sister. Bale has denied the charges.

With all of the negative press surrounding him lately, we thought we’d take a moment to highlight a more positive face of this actor.

Bale turned vegetarian at age 6 after reading Charlotte’s Web and has been active in numerous welfare groups such as Greenpeace and World Wildlife Fund.

He was quoted once saying:

“My family has always been very interested in animal care and animal rights.  All my pets are from rescue homes so I tend to be aware of these issues.”

Did We Miss Josh Hartnett’s Birthday? Did He Eat Meat During The Black Dahlia?

Giorgio Armani Beauty Hosts A Luncheon For Josh Hartnett

It looks like we did. Oh, well. Happy Belated anyway to the vegetarian actor who’s starred in such films as The Faculty, Black Hawk Down, and Pearl Harbor.

It seems he felt he had to abandon his lifestyle temporarily while filming in Bulgaria because a doctor told him he needed it for the grueling training regime to play a boxer in The Black Dahlia.

An interview with Contact Music:

“It’s all meat, all the time, over there. “I was trying for awhile, but I would work 12 hours and then box for four hours every night. “I was gaunt. The doctor told me, ‘Eat meat.” And that was it.”

Hmm…Not to judge a man on his (belated) birthday, but we do know of many athletes, including Prince Fielder and ultimate fighting champ vegan Mac Danzig, who’ve maintained a vegetarian or vegan diet under grueling physical conditions.

We suppose all devoted fans will let this slide, but we just had to call attention to it.

Even Ronald McDonald Won’t Eat A Big Mac

Crowds Gather For Macy's Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Bostonist featured an article discussing how several celebrities have brought vegness into the spotlight.

Some of the famous discussed included Oprah’s famous 21-day cleanse when she abstained from lots of things, animal products being one of them, Russell Simmons, Kansas City Chief’s Tony Gonzalez, and Ronald McDonald.

Geoffrey Giuliano was one of the actors who played Ronald McDonald in the past. Apparently he was so disturbed by the idea of factory farming, he had to give up his job to keep a clear conscience.

In an interview, he was quoted as saying, “There’s no question that I was manipulating these children. I was a highly paid, highly trained, highly polished actor. Every show was a performance and I had a mandate to get that message out there, and yeah, it was not too hard – anybody can manipulate a child. I just went home one night, and I said, ‘I cannot do this, I can’t live with myself if I continue to do this.”

An accomplished actor and author, Giuliano has written over 30 best-selling books and has worked as an actor, producer, and director.

It appears good things can happen when you quit the right (or shall we say wrong) day job.
