Quantcast Vegetarian StarJesse Eisenberg Humane Society Video To Protect Exotic Birds

Jesse Eisenberg has recorded a PSA for the Humane Society of the United States that advises against buying exotic birds in stores.

Eisenberg had the opportunity to voice the character of a Macaw in Rio, a film about the trafficking of exotic birds and the destruction of their natural habitats.

“If an animal’s natural home is in the wild, then chances are, that’s where it belongs,” Eisenberg said. “Unfortunately, the demand for these intelligent, complex creatures—whether captive-bred or wild caught—is decimating the wild parrot species.”

Some sellers of exotic birds like parrots keep the animals in such deplorable conditions, they often develop both physical and mental signs of distress, such as malnutrition and zoonotic diseases. Adding to this problem is the illegal trafficking of birds that still takes place.

Animal lovers can help by supporting a bird sanctuary or rescue group or even adopting an acceptable bird if they can fit their needs.

Adam Parascandola, director of animal cruelty investigations for The HSUS said, “Parrots are highly intelligent, social, and long-lived animals whose complex needs cannot be met by most owners, which is why so many are abandoned.”
