Olympian Amanda Beard Prefers Nudity To Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Fur.

Ahem…she sure looks comfortable in her own skin.

Joining the long list of celebs to strip for animal rights causes, Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard posed naked in front of an American flag in Beijing for a PETA advertisement.

“I have seen a lot of the videos, and (it) brings me to tears,” she said. “What (some people) think is pretty is actually something that’s very gruesome and gross.”

With her sleek toned physique, being labeled one of the sexiest athletes, and appearances in Sports Illustrated and FHM magazines, this swimmer is definitely anything but gross.

hellogoodbye’s Forrest Kline Answers Our Burning Vegan Question

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

MTV TRL

Forrest Kline of the band hellogoodbye, spoke with the Editor of The Los Angeles Loyolan,  newspaper for Loyola Marymount University, where he answered “11 burning questions,” including why on earth anyone would name their kid Forrest:

“My grandpa’s name is Forrest Scott Kline,” he said. “My dad’s name is Scott Forrest Kline. My name is Forrest Scott Kline. They just flip-flopped I guess.”

Now, that we’ve gotten that question out of the way, it’s time to move on to what we feel is a more “hot” question: Why did he become vegan?

“I’ve been vegan for two, maybe three years and I was vegetarian a year before that. I decided to go vegetarian because of moral, animal cruelty kind of reasons. I didn’t want to eat animals. I made a slow transition. I stopped eating red meat. I slowly added more things.”

Although he didn’t say he was straight edge, he does talk of living a pretty clean lifestyle. Although he said his sister, was a “bad influence” when he was in junior high when he did drink alcohol and smoke, he prefers to get his thrills off non-drug sources, like music, now.

“I don’t like the idea of kind of being out of your own head [and] not really knowing what’s going on, that kind of thing, and not being in control. I’m kind of a hands on control [freak]. [I] can’t let go.”

Chris Walla Of Death Cab For Cutie Likes Amy’s Kitchen Frozen Meals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians.

Death Cab For Cutie Performs At The Joint

Chris Walla is a vegetarian, but things haven’t always been that way. As a teenager, he made the decision after realizing he was on the verge of eating anywhere from 2-6 hamburgers a day if he didn’t change his diet quick.

These days, it’s more like 2-6 servings of veggies every day and a whole lotta Amy’s Kitchen Frozen Meals, which accompany him while on tour with Death Cab For Cutie.

“They are so wonderful and so easy!  Pretty much everything that company (Amy’s Kitchen) does is pretty great,” said Walla.

He also gives good advice for those who are not quite old enough to make their own food choices.

“It was a bit tricky as a 15-year-old living at home in a household where, you know … my mom and dad were “meat and potatoes” Americans. Their diets consisted of a meat main dish, potatoes and gravy, and a vegetable side–that sort of thing. It’s a little difficult to get through that when you’re so dependent on somebody else for your food. Just know that if it’s something that’s important to you, there will be a point in your life when you’re in control of what you eat and why you eat it.”

Jacob Thiele of The Faint: Get Yourself Some Good Veg Cookbooks

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 in Male Musicians.

With a single out called, “The Geeks were Right,” we had to do our research and check out what else The Faint had to offer.  They are a dance/punk new wave band from Omaha, Nebraska of all places. They were all avid skateboarders growing up, but when member Todd Fink developed knee problems, he turned his focus to music as well as recruiting his friends Dapose, Joel Peterson, Clark Baechle and vegetarian Jacob Thiele.

The band is currently teaming up with PETA and if you go to this website before August 13th, you can enter to win a copy of their latest CD, Fasciinatiion.

Member Jacob Thiele sat down to make a little video for PETA as well, where he discussed his motives for going vegetarian. He said he thinks animals shouldn’t have to die for “something as frivolous as a cheeseburger,” and thinks getting yourself a few good vegetarian and vegan cookbook should help people appreciate what you can get out of a veg lifestyle.

Apparently, he’s pretty convincing. He’s gotten both his grandfather and father, who grew up on a dairy farm, to start drinking soymilk for health reasons. Watch the rest of the video, get yourself some good veg cookbooks, and don’t forget to enter to win the free CD!
