If your favorite item was taken off the menu at a restaurant, why not stage a peaceful protest?

Or at least talk to the manager about bringing it back.

Alkaline Trio started its band in the Chicago area, so Matt Skiba was well acquainted with vegetarian and mostly vegan restaurant on Halsted, The Chicago Diner.

Skiba loved the Vegan Caesar Salad so much, when it disappeared from the menu, he requested it be put back on there.

Skiba told VegNews, “Chicago Diner is amazing. I love that place. I’ve been eating there since I can remember. Two years ago they took my favorite thing off the menu. Initially it was called the Seitanic Caesar Salad, this vegan Caesar salad that was absolutely killer. Then they changed the name of it-they have funky, fun names for a lot of dishes-and then, I don’t know why they did it, but they took it off the menu and I was so bummed about it that I went in and complained. I was nice about it and they obviously make great food aside from that salad, but I politely protested and said that they should put it back on the menu. And they did! About two weeks ago I got a phone call from a friend of mine saying that they put the Caesar back on the menu.”

From the looks of the current Spring/Summer offerings, the Vegan Caesar Chicken Salad still has a place at the diner.

Vegetarian Times hosted their 2009 Dining Out Awards and nearly 700 readers voted for restaurants based in different regions of the U.S and several specialty veg restaurants like Most Eco-Fabulous and Totally RAWsome.

Chrissie Hynde’s Vegiterranean won “Most Promising Rookie.”

Several other restaurants made the cut, including The Chicago Diner for the midwest. If you recall, the diner is where Ellen DeGeneres went gaga over the vegan seitan hot wings and had some Fed Ex’d to her studios in California.

Peter Max’s fave, Candle 79, won the category for the northeast.

There are foodies. And then there are fanatical foodies. When you love vegan hot wings so much, you have them Fed Ex’ed from Chicago to Burbank, California, you qualify for the latter. But hey, when you’re Ellen Degeneres, you can Fed Ex whatever you want.

Ellen ate at The Chicago Diner while filming her show in Chicago a few months ago. She liked the BBQ vegan seitan buffalo wings so much, she had the restaurant Fed Ex more when she got back to California.

Ellen even considered flying the restaurant’s pastry chef out to California to cater her and Portia’s completely vegan wedding.

Those of you in the Chicagoland area know what we’re talking about!

The Chicago Diner, which has a slogan of “Meat free since ’83,” is a completely vegetarian and almost vegan restaurant located on the north side of the Windy City. You can get anything from Radical “Reuben” sandwiches with seitan to BBQ Bacon Cheese “Burgers” to tofu scramblers to roasted vegetable lasagnas.

Nope, flying Chicago Diner vegan buffalo wings from Chi-Town to Cali ain’t a bad thing at all. It’s definitely better than flying truckloads of bacon from England to Italy.
