“We were of that generation that came after punk and post-punk. People don’t talk about it now, but it was non-macho. If you were an alternative musician, you were political, because of the times [Thatcherism and the Falklands war]. It was taken for granted that the bands you shared a stage with had the same politics. I’m not sure you could say that now.”

Johnny Marr, in an interview with The Guardian on how many fans were turned on to some of The Smiths’ ideas, such as vegetarianism, after hearing hit songs like “Meat Is Murder.”

I think that is quite literally rock music changing someone’s life – it’s certainly changing the life of animals. It is one of the things I am most proud of. I think it was quirky to call the album ‘Meat is Murder’ and it was way ahead of its time, but we were on a label that let us do that kind of thing.”

Johnny Marr, in a new book by author Neil Taylor titled “Document and Eyewitness: An Intimate History of Rough Trade” on how The Smith’s 1985 album Meat Is Murder inspired many of his fans to stop eating animals.
