Premiere Of Sony Pictures Classics Rachel Getting Married - Arrivals

Several vegetarian and vegan hip hop stars will be making guest appearances in the film, In Pursuit Of A Green Planet, a documentary on food choice, health, and the planet.

In the film, Keith Tucker travels the country on a Greyhound bus powered by recycled vegetable oil while he makes the transition from eating the average American diet to a totally organic, vegan one.

Tucker brings along some adolescents who are already experiencing diet related health problems and are at a crucial point to change their lives forever. Not only do the kids get lessons in making themselves and the planet healthier, they get the privilege of meeting some awesome veggie hip hop stars along the way, like Saul Williams, Persia White, Justin Bua, Stic Man, and KRS One.

According to hiphoppress.com:

“The goal of the “Pursuit of a Green Planet” documentary is to take an inside look at how the food we eat affects our health and tie healthy living back to the origins of Hip Hop. As Hip Hop was a pioneering art form for the urban community looking for a better life in the late 70s, “Pursuit of a Green Planet” brings those ideals full circle by incorporating Hip Hop into the Green Movement.”

KRS-One’s “Beef” Offers Blast From The Past

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 in Male Singers, Videos.

Here it is! A blast from the 90s past and the song behind Afya Ibomu’s mother prompting her to switch her daughter to a vegetarian diet.

If you recall, Afya Ibomu was Erykah Badu’s nutritionist while on tour in 2003, and she has her own vegan soulfood cookbook  out now!

Some lyrics from KRS-One’s “Beef”:

Let us begin now with the cow
The way it gets to your plate and how
The cow doesn’t grow fast enough for man
So though his greed he makes a master plan
He has drugs to make the cow grow quicker
Through the stress, the cow get sicker
21 Different drugs are pumped
Into the cow in one big lump
Just before it dies, it cries in the slaughter full of germs and flies
Off with the head, they’ve packed it, drained it, and cart it
And there it is in your local supermarket
A corpse, neatly packed
And you wonder about heart attacks?

If you want to know how Erykah Badu got her vegan self on track to the best health, look no further than the cookbook written by her ex nutritionist, Afya Ibomu.

Afya worked with Badu in 2003, and now the lovely lady is a celebrity herself, with her recently published cookbook, The Vegan Soulfood Guide to the Galaxy.

It’s filled with all things soul food-sweet potato pie, buffalo wings, corn bread, collard greens, hearty cookies-veganized.

Afya’s mom switched her to a vegan diet as a child after she had so many illness like asthma and irritable bowel syndrome that weren’t responding to traditional medicines. An allergist suggested Afya’s diet might be contributing to her ailments, and the KRS-One song, “Beef,” also played a role in mom putting her foot down and saying, “No more meat Afya.”

Afya  is the CEO of her holistic lifestyle company, Nattral Unlimited, LLC at www.NATTRAL.com. She lives with her husband, stic.man of the Dead Prez hip hop group, with their son, Itwela.

Girlie Girl and her army has one of Afya’s recipes, buffalo tofu wings, posted on her blog.

You can order a copy of the Vegan Soulfood Guide, which comes with a free DVD, “Pimp My Tofu,” at www.NATTRAL.com.
