Quantcast Vegetarian StarFarm Sanctuary Walk For Animals

“Farm animals are smart, friendly animals who experience fear, pain and suffering just like cats, dogs and all other living beings do. The cruel conditions endured by billions of farm animals annually on factory farms all across North America is an issue that affects all of us. As a proud Brooklyn native who believes all animals should be treated with compassion, I am honored to be back in my hometown leading the 2010 New York City Walk for Farm Animals.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Reality TV, Videos.

Bob Harper is the 2010 spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Animals, which spans across 78 cities in the U.S. and even includes a virtual “no walk” walk. The Biggest Loser coach’s popularity has certainly helped Farm Sanctuary’s cause, as well as draw attention to the welfare of farm animals and the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle. In an exclusive interview with Farm Sanctuary, Harper discusses how growing up on a cattle farm made cows his favorite farm animal, his views on modern farming and how going vegan has changed his life.

Growing Up On A Cattle Farm In Tennessee:
“I have to tell you that because I grew up on this cattle farm it was just the way of life then. On the farm I grew up on the cows were treated relatively respectfully. They had pastures, they lived a good quality of life, of course until their death. To me there was more compassion back then because now … the thing that really pains me … is that these factory farms are just treating these animals like they’re light fixtures, like they’re not real and don’t have blood running through them. It’s just shocking to me.”

Bob Harper will kick off Farm Sanctuary’s 2010 Walk For Animals, an event meant to raise money for one of the nation’s leading farm animal protection agencies that rescues farm animals and educates the public on the conditions these animals endure in factory farms.

Since vegetarian Harper is one of the fitness gurus behind the popular weight loss reality TV show, The Biggest Loser, it’s only fitting he would put his face behind a campaign to keep both people and animals healthy.

“Getting and staying physically fit is a lot easier when you have a powerful motivation, and I can’t think of a better reason to get moving this fall than to raise vital funds and awareness for farm animals,” said Harper.

“Amazing Race” Terence Gerchberg Vegan: Walk For Farm Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 5th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Reality TV.

Terence Gerchberg was the poor vegetarian soul on The Amazing Race who ate sheep rear during an eating challenge-only to throw it up moments later and be disgusted with the whole ordeal.

Since his stint on Amazing Race, he’s become vegan, according to The “V” Word, and made an appearance at this weekend’s Farm Sanctuary Walk For Animals.

“There was a surprise visit from Terence Gerchberg who competed on The Amazing Race last season. Gerchberg was a vegetarian who faced a challenge to eat meat for money. Today Terence is a vegan who says if ever faced with such a challenge again, he would never go against his ethics and values. Inspiring!”

Way to go Terence!

Besides Terence, Jane Velez-Mitchell gave a speech on her rescue dogs, New York State Assembly member Linda Rosenthal spoke on pets and domestic violence situations, and Shawn Sweeney from the Jane Goodall Institute shared his experiences from the Institute.
