Amy Smart Wants Everything Organic (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink, Videos.

Amy Smart and other stars were asked at the 22nd annual Environmental Media Awards what they would do if they had superhero powers to make the world greener.

Place a cape on Smart and a pesticide zapping dagger in her hand as she says she “would make everything organic.”

That’s a great ideal, but you don’t need omnipotent organic superhero powers to make the world greener or even your family’s kitchen. Just pay attention to the major “monsters” of conventional that should be zapped–or at least bought in the organic form as often as possible.

“The fact is, most people in the U.S. eat way more meat than is good for them or the planet, but even knowing this, the chances are little that we are all going to become vegetarians, much less vegan. Asking everyone to go vegetarian or vegan is not a realistic or attainable goal, but we can focus on a more plant-based diet and support the farmers who raise their animals humanely and sustainably. This is why I am such a big believer in the Meatless Monday Movement and the Environmental Working Group’s Meat Eaters Guide to Climate Change and Health.”

Dr. Andrew Weil, author and integrative medicine pioneer, discusses the dangers of pesticides in food, especially fruits and vegetables in this clip that also shows the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen,” list of produce you should always buy organic.

Organic fruits and veggies won’t be found in the $1 aisle, so when the budget is tight, it’s a good idea to keep this list handy to know what you can away with.

“A lot of these chemicals are toxic to the nervous system. Other may disrupt endocrine function in the body. They may increase risk of cancer and other chronic diseases,” Dr. Weil explains in the video.

Dr. Weil says data exists that shows people who eat organic have lower measurable pesticide levels in their tissues.
