EMA And Yes To Carrots Give “The Garden Challenge” To Students

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 in Actresses, Children, Gardening, Videos.

The Environmental Media Association and Yes To Carrots teamed up to launch “The Garden Challenge” that encourages students to get acquainted with growing their own produce in a contest where schools competed for a gardening grant.

Students uploaded videos explaining why a garden would be a great addition to their schools.

Daryl Hannah, Wendie Malick, and Rosario Dawson all have words to say in the video at CBS as they’re outside among students and cabbage.

Hannah thinks a school garden will make students less fearful of vegetables.

“I become a vegetarian when I was 11, but I was always afraid of vegetables,” Hannah said. “It wasn’t until I actually started growing them that I was not afraid to eat them.”

A video of the event can be viewed at CBS.

Amy Smart currently serves as chair of the Environmental Media Association’s Young Hollywood Board, where she recently had the chance to influence youth by starting several gardens at inner city schools in Los Angeles.

“We have 10 gardens in low-income schools all over the city,” Smart said, according to MNN. “We’re trying to build more and raise awareness and give kids the opportunity to learn about nature.”

Smart is also growing her own organic vegetables at home, which include kale, Swiss Chard, carrots, tomatoes, squash and sweet corn.

The Environmental Media Association is celebrating 20 years of encouraging Hollywood to spread the news about going green.

Tonight, a gala is being held as part of a celebration of two decades of greening Hollywood and an awards ceremony to honor individuals who helped increase environmental awareness.

Vegan singer Jason Mraz is on the list for greening his concert tours and using eco friendly textiles.

The AP is reporting some of the other honorees:

“Richard Branson, who pledged to invest all proceeds from his Virgin Airlines toward developing clean fuels and renewable energy; the National Geographic Society, which supports environmental education through various programs and grants; Centropolis Entertainment, the production company led by director Roland Emmerich and producer Michael Wimer that released the first carbon-neutral film in Hollywood history, “The Day After Tomorrow.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is doing everything she can to green the set of The New Adventures of Old Christine.

“Every light bulb is a compact fluorescent,” Julia told Mother Nature Network. “We have a big recycling program. We tried to get rid of water bottles last year and failed at it. It’s a tricky thing to do with a crew, but we’re going to try it again this year.”

Julia is an environmentalist who is active with the NRDC and the Environmental Media Association, and serves on the boards of Heal the Bay and Heal the Ocean.

But Julia hasn’t made one important move to protect the environment-she hasn’t yet gone vegetarian.

“I love vegetables— I should be a vegetarian, and I feel guilty saying I’m not,” Julia told Shape. “But I like meat and chicken.”

We’ve already give Julia the how to eat like a carnivore by shopping in the faux meat section lecture, so we’ll just suggest one final thing: Why not make the set of Old Christine greener by implementing a meat-free day of the week?
