Quantcast Vegetarian StarConklin Dairy Farm

Gary Conklin, owner of Conklin Dairy Farm, the Ohio based farm where Billy Joe Gregg, Jr. was caught on camera beating a cow and poking it with a pitchfork by animal rights group Mercy for Animals, will not be charged with any criminal activity involving the incident with one of his employees.

This cleared the way for him to talk to ABN, Ohio’s Voice for Agriculture, about the incident, the employee charged with several counts of cruelty, and its impact on business and his family.

Temple Grandin Thinks Conklin Dairy Farm Incident Is Rare

Dr. Temple Grandin, scientist who has worked with the animal agricultural industry to bring change to way animals raised for food and handled, spoke with Food Safety News on the Conklin Dairy Farm investigation that uncovered a worker beating and torturing a cow. Grandin feels these incidents are not the norm, as many activist insists.

“Most places are not doing stuff that horrible. To say that every dairy treats their animals that way, no, that’s wrong, they’re not. But on the other hand, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle, between the animal rights advocates that say everything is an atrocity, to the industry who says everything’s just fine. I’ve worked in a lot of places. It’s somewhere in the middle. It’s a constant battle. You can’t under staff and overwork. Tired people are more likely to get angry, and so are overworked people.”

Alec Baldwin–Conklin Dairy Farm Proves Animal Activists Needed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues.

The premiere of Date Night

Alec Baldwin contributed to the Huffington Post his ideas on politics, specifically, his opinion of what New York city needs in a governor. Baldwin thinks the governor should have many priorities, including reducing air pollution and controlling taxes.

On his final note, Baldwin touched on another area of politics that has nothing to do with New York, but with Ohio and the recent undercover investigation that discovered cows being severely abused by employees.

“On another, certainly more important note, did you see the video posted here regarding regarding the Conklin Farm animal abuse story in Ohio? Let me assure you, someone risked their health and maybe their life to record that video. When you see this, you will never again doubt the necessity for and courage of the animal rights movement.”

Thanks to these activists, one employee has already been charged with several counts of cruelty and hopefully this serves as a wakeup call that mistreatment of farm animals is never politics as usual.

Farm Sanctuary’s Gene Baur Discusses Goals For June

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 in Animal Issues.

Winter Wonderland For The Animals: A Farm Sanctuary Benefit

The Los Angeles Times has featured five questions with Farm Sanctuary’s co-founder and president Gene Baur on the organization’s goals and his personal motivation for the work he does to protect animals.

Baur says June, like any month, will be a busy one at Farm Sanctuary, as he and other representatives will continue their work with the case against the Ohio dairy worker charged with 12 counts of animal abuse to cows as well as talking to officials in Washington about the state of school food.

“Farm Sanctuary will remain involved with the Conklin dairy case and initiative in Ohio, and our farm visitor programs will continue. We’ll also be reaching out to officials in Washington, D.C., and urging them to support policies to prevent animal cruelty and promote a healthier, plant-based food production system. Among the federal legislation we are supporting is the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act (H.R. 4733) and the Healthy School Meals Act (H.R. 4870).”

2010 Winter TCA Tour - Day 5

Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest have written an open letter to Gary Conklin and workers at the Conklin Dairy Farm in Ohio where an undercover investigation by animal rights group Mercy For Animals revealed severe abuse to dairy cows that included body slamming, repeatedly punching them in the face, stomping on their heads, pulling them by their ears and giving as many as 40 blows to the head.

A graphic video of the ordeal can be seen after the break in this post.

“Our daughter came to us last night urging us to watch the video of the abuse at your plant. She was overcome with grief that human beings could inflict such cruelty and unconscious hatred at the most benign of creatures and their infants. The shocking images were too much for her father and me but we watched enough to know where it led.”

“What will you do?”
