Barilla Pasta

Barilla Pasta has announced it’s switching to cage-free eggs for 45% of its eggs by the end of 2011, Treehugger reports.

A cage-free environment allows the hen to do many of its natural behaviors, such as nesting and spreading wings, and therefore is said to lessen stress on the animal. Just imagine yourself not being able to scratch that area or, ahem, adjust yourself when the moment is right because you share space so cramped with other humans.

Duff Goldman

Duff Goldman, star of Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” has made the announcement that he’s switching to cage-free eggs for his company, Charm City Cakes.

Goldman joins fellow celebrity chef Guy Fieri and dozens of national retailers and franchises like Quizno’s and Denny’s to source eggs from farms that don’t confine hens in cages so small, they aren’t even able to spread their wings. Cage-free hens have 2-3 times more space than caged hens.

“Charm City Cakes is pleased to have switched to only using cage-free eggs, which is a great way to improve animal welfare and meet our customers’ expectations for being socially responsible,” said Duff.

7th Annual Malibu Wine Classic

Mariel Hemingway was recently out promoting her latest book, Mariel’s Kitchen — Simple Ingredients for a Delicious and Satisfying Life, which contains several vegetarian friendly recipes.

A few years ago in 2003, Mariel created Blisscuits, a healthier cookie filled with omega-3 fatty acids and free of refined sugar, hydrogenated oil and gluten.

In addition, Blisscuits use egg whites sourced from suppliers that use cage free hens.

Blisscuits were created for her ex-husband after he was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma.

“(So, I told him) Give me a couple months, let’s work on this together, your food,” Mariel told the Bothell Reporter.

“And he had to change the way he lived his life, so he had to start eating differently and looking at his life differently — so it was food, it was exercise, it was learning how to meditate, it was having a different perspective.”

Mariel’s ex-husband has been cancer free for 11 years.

The granddaughter of the famous writer Ernest is into seasonal foods and her current favorite food of the season is the artichoke.
