Barilla Pasta Goes Cage-Free With Some Eggs

Barilla Pasta

Barilla Pasta has announced it’s switching to cage-free eggs for 45% of its eggs by the end of 2011, Treehugger reports.

A cage-free environment allows the hen to do many of its natural behaviors, such as nesting and spreading wings, and therefore is said to lessen stress on the animal. Just imagine yourself not being able to scratch that area or, ahem, adjust yourself when the moment is right because you share space so cramped with other humans.

Duff Goldman

Duff Goldman, star of Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” has made the announcement that he’s switching to cage-free eggs for his company, Charm City Cakes.

Goldman joins fellow celebrity chef Guy Fieri and dozens of national retailers and franchises like Quizno’s and Denny’s to source eggs from farms that don’t confine hens in cages so small, they aren’t even able to spread their wings. Cage-free hens have 2-3 times more space than caged hens.

“Charm City Cakes is pleased to have switched to only using cage-free eggs, which is a great way to improve animal welfare and meet our customers’ expectations for being socially responsible,” said Duff.

Dalai Lama Urges Cage-Free Eggs. May We Suggest Trader Joe’s?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Business, Food & Drink.

The Dalai Lama has written a statement posted on the Humane Society International’s website, urging consumers to purchase cage-free eggs from producers that allow hens to live in more natural conditions.

“The abuse we inflict on hens has always been particularly disturbing to me and I have always been particularly concerned toward how these animals are treated in industrial food production. I am troubled to learn about the practice of confining egg laying hens in tiny cages. In these cages, birds cannot engage in their natural behaviours, such as spreading their wings, laying eggs in a nesting area, perching, scratching at the ground, even standing on a solid surface. Each hen has less space to live than the very sheet of paper I have written this letter on.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger

The Terminator is helping to terminate hen cruelty in California.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has just signed a law that will require all whole (shell) eggs sold in California to come from hens that were able to, “stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs without touching one another or the sides of an enclosure,” according to the Humane Society blog.

That means California will essentially be a cage-free state.

Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, which owns several bagel and coffee chains, including Einstein Bros., has made the announcement it’s switching to cage-free eggs at its 680 locations in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

“We’re proud to be launching this initiative and believe that moving in this direction will help improve the treatment of hens,” said James O’Reilly, chief concept officer for ENRG.

The Humane Society of the United States commended ENRG for making the switch towards better welfare for chickens.

“Einstein Noah’s decision to phase in cage-free eggs represents an important step,” said Josh Balk, corporate outreach director of The HSUS’ factory farming campaign. “The Humane Society of the United States applauds the company for improving the lives of farm animals.”

According to the HSUS website, there are about 280 million hens in factory farm cages so small, they cannot even spread their wings.

Cage-free is not the most ideal environment, as birds may still have their beaks cut off and may be prohibited from going outside, but they have 2-3 times more space than caged hens, allowing them to perform normal behaviors such as walking, spreading wings and laying eggs in nests.
