There’s No Meat In Lisa Edelstein’s “House”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Idol Gives Back 2008 - Arrivals

Lisa Edelstein plays the ever patient Dr. Cuddy who has to endure the anti-social, grumpy, and downright rude Dr. Gregory House on the Fox T.V. hit series House. She’s been a vegetarian for 26 years, with bouts of strict veganism here and there.

She cooks for meat eaters, but never has felt the need to compromise. “They never miss the meat when they eat at my house and they always leave full,” she said in an interview. She also said not being a meat eater is “no big deal,” and suits her well.

Before House, Edelstein played roles of a transsexual, hooker, and sex-obsessed artist and claims to have done them so well based on her personally knowing these types of people.

No wonder we never made it to the big screen. All of our friends are completely boring. Read more of the interview here.

Russell Simmons Thanks Kentucky Fried Chicken

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 25th, 2008 in Authors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Alicia Keys Honored At

Russell Simmons has become the latest vegan celebrity to bite into Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new vegan faux chicken sandwich, which currently is only available in Canada.

He was one of many stars who worked with PETA to convince KFC to treat its chickens better before sending them off the slaughter. As part of the deal, KFC now offers a vegan chicken sandwich.

“As I bit into the delicious un-chicken and lettuce wrap, I remembered how frustrating and seemingly unfruitful mediating those talks between KFC, their supplier Yum Brands, and PETA were.”

“I have long been concerned with promoting better eating habits for myself, my family, my community and the planet. I am saddened by the fact that the most accessible and affordable food to low income communities is fast primarily unhealthy food. Therefore, I view KFC’s Canadian launch of this new vegan sandwich as the first step toward a more compassionate KFC and hope it will be made available here in the United States for all to enjoy.”

“If each one of us has a more watchful eye where we step, we will create a new earth where the abuse of the planet, the animals, and each other will be less prevalent. For that I thank KFC in Canada for making a conscious effort to support the growth of this new earth.”

Pamela Anderson’s Top Vegan Restaurant List

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, August 22nd, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Pamela Anderson Press Conference Ahead Of Big Brother Appearance

Pamela Anderson is quite the vocal vegan, but when she’s not calling a particular carnivore b$%ch or wh#$e, she can be found giving more positive reinforcement, such as letting everyone know where the best vegan food establishments are in L.A.

“Los Angeles is the easiest place in the world to eat vegan,” she told the LA Times.  A lot of people know about the great meatless entrees at Real Food Daily and Newsroom Cafe, but there are some other places that have very unique menus.”

So if you’re in L.A. with some non veg friends and need to munch at a place that’s not as well known for tempeh, Anderson has been kind enough to point you in the right direction.

Pure Luck:

Fried pickles, vegan sloppy joes and BBQ sandwiches. And they cook with jack fruit, which is an amazing fruit they use to make the mock meat tangy.

Astro Burger

If you are a fast food junkie you can always count on the Astro Burger on Melrose near Paramount Studios for veggie chili dogs and soy chicken fajitas.

If you read the rest of Pamela’s list, you can actually vote on whether or not you think she knows what she’s talking about, at least when it comes to good vegan food.

Kanye West Brings Fat Boca Burger To Chicago Fatburger Fans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Kanye West -Book Signing

He ain’t nothing but a burger digger.

Kanye West is giving Fatburger boys in Chai Town the option of a veggie burger. Well, maybe he’s not specifically offering veggie burgers, but he’s become the owner of 10 Fatburger Franchises in the Chicago area.

Besides the usual fare of greasy, bloody Baby Fat and Kingburgers, Fatburger also offers a Boca Burger. While this probably won’t convert Fatburger’s loyal flesh lovers, at least it does provide some healthier options. We don’t know the details about how a Fatburger Boca Burger is cooked (on the same grill as meat or not), so this may or not please all vegetarians.

The first restaurant is set to open in Orland Park in September.

Russell Simmons Demanding Risotto Everywhere In New York

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 14th, 2008 in Authors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Lokah Music Presents The Release Of

Not long ago, we brought you the news of Russell Simmons asking the chef at Nick and Tony’s Restaurant in New York to make his risotto vegan.

We are guessing risotto is one of this yoga loving hip hop mogul’s favorites as we have read that another New York restaurant made changes to their menu in order to please him.

The Waverly Inn’s chef John DeLucie makes quinoa risotto with green curry sauce as a result of a request from Mr. Simmons.

We’ve never had the pleasure of spotting Mr. Simmons live in action (yet), but we definitely are taking notes in case we’re ever awarded the prize of having lunch or dinner with him.

RZA Introduces His “RZA Veggie Burger”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 in Actors, Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Premiere of Columbia Picture's

As promised, we like to bring you oldies but goodies. RZA is an actor, rapper, musician, and producer of the group Wu-Tang Clan. Born Robert Diggs, he uses an awful lot of other names such as Bobby Digital, Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig Allah, Bobby Steels, Rzarector, Abbott, and Prince Rakeem.

A year ago when he was touring in Europe, Time Out took a little time out to ask him questions about his veg lifestyle. He’s created his own veggie burger, the RZA Burger. With all the stars doing their own food lines lately, we’re wondering if the RZA burger can give Boca a run for their money. One catch though: The RZA burger is served on waffles!  While we’re not flocking to the stores to request them, maybe there will be a niche market somewhere.

You’re touring Europe right now with the Wu-Tang Clan. I know you keep a strict vegetarian diet—what are you eating over there?
The Grand Hyatt in Berlin definitely came strong with the spicy rigatoni. Berlin also had a good butternut-squash soup. In the old days it was terrible over here for a vegetarian. Nowadays they stepped their game up, yo. The whole Clan’s been saying it.

What’s a RZA burger?
A RZA burger is a veggie patty with a fried egg, cheese, lettuce, pickles and all that, smashed between two delicious waffles. Spread mustard and mayo on it with a little butter and put that shit together. Trust me, son, that shit needs to be in stores.

I’m sold. Do you bust out the grill on tour?
If I have my special tour bus ready by then, you may be able to get a burger. If I’m on the regular tour bus, then bong bong.

Sarah Mair and Hugh Blair are two bloggers documenting their travel experiences at Tale Of Two Burghs. It was a visit to Edinburgh, where there is a restaurant called David Bann, where the waiter gave the dish on K.D. Lang’s favorite meal there:

“Damien asked the server what she recommended and she told us that her favorite– and k.d. Lang’s apparently— was tart of mushroom, spinach and Criffell cheese: wild and cultivated mushrooms cooked with wine, garlic and tarragon blended with fresh spinach and Criffel, a semi soft cheese from Dumfries, baked on homemade puff pastry. Served with baby potatoes, carrots and onion gravy. It did not disappoint.”

Lang once made headlines with her, “Meat Stinks,” commercials, which angered some members of the beef farming community. We’re not trying to offend, but how else should we put this? Meat stinks… angers…they say truth does hurt.

Lang’s latest album, Watershed, was released in February of this year and is the first original material she’s produced since 2000.
