Quantcast Vegetarian StarAnderson Cooper Shows Fat Cats Not Always Laughing Matter (Video)

Anderson Cooper featured a segment on his show about a TV anchor who could not get through a feature on an obese cat who swam for exercise without laughing.

Holly, a 13-year old cat, loves the outdoors and getting physical, but still has the problem of retaining a few extra pounds here and there. Her owner strapped a lifejacket on her and took her to the local indoor pool for a few laps.

“So unprofessional,” Cooper jokingly remarks. “That poor cat worked its tail off to lose one pound in six weeks. And the anchor can’t even keep it together to give that story that gravitas it deserves.”

While most animal lovers agree a cat in a wetsuit at the local spa is funny enough for a late night comedy show, the issue of pet obesity is not.

A 2011 study by APOP (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention) found that over 50 percent of cats were either obese or overweight. Obese or overweight cats are at risk for many of the same disorders obese or overweight humans are–including diabetes, arthritis and liver problems.

Laughter is a great medicine for humans, but obese cats need restricted feeding sessions versus being able to eat freely, exercise just like Holly and low-fat treats designed for cats instead of table food.
