Joaquin Phoenix is the unfortunate star in a new ad from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that highlights the suffering and struggle fish endure.
“My family and I were on a boat, catching fish,” Phoenix said of a fishing experience he had as a child.
“As one fish was caught, he was writhing, then he was thrown against the side of the boat. You couldn’t disguise what it was. This was what we did to animals to eat them. The animal went from a living, vibrant creature fighting for life to a violent death. I recognized it, as did my brothers and sisters.”
According to PETA, the fishing industry kills more than six billion fish each year.
“Fish are smart, interesting animals with unique personalities, and just like dogs, cats, and humans, they feel pain,” the group writes on a site that urging people to pledge to stop consuming fish.
“Scientists who study pain are in complete agreement that the pain response in fish is basically identical to the pain response system in mammals and birds.”
The film is shot by photographer Michael Muller, who filmed sharks underwater to demonstrate how the creatures lived in their habitat.
