Quantcast Vegetarian StarMitt Romney Mocked On “SNL” For Contradictory Animal Views (Video)

Saturday Night Live chose to poke fun of potential Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a skit where he “claimed to be interested in things we know he is not interested in.”

Like animal welfare, for instance.

The skit touted Romney as both the future “cat-neutering president” and the “cock-fighting president,” reminding those that follow a politician’s record on animal rights about an all too heartbreaking incident in 1983 when Romney allegedly took a trip to Canada with a dog strapped to the roof of the car.

First speaking before the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Romney character says, “There is one issue on which I will never compromise … because it’s the core of who I am: cat-spaying. It’s simply the right thing to do — and, quite frankly, the reason I got into this race. I want to be known as the cat-neutering president.”

Later he tells the Kiamichi Country Sportsman’s Association, “Unfortunately, with our schedules, Ann and I don’t get to nearly as many cockfights as we’d like. But let me tell you, cockfighting has brought us more sheer enjoyment in our marriage than anything we have ever experienced. And that’s why, frankly, I want to be the cockfighting president.”

As far as the real Romney is concerned, the 1983 family trip to Canada incident was covered in Time magazine. The publication called the act not only cruel, but potentially illegal.

“Massachusetts’s animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal “in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon.”

In Romney’s defense, he has taken several steps to show he does have an interest in ending animal cruelty, including signing legislation that increased penalties for animal abuse in Massachusetts and allowed social service workers to report cases they found when investigating a residence.
