Oprah has retired from the daytime talk show business and is all set to air her last episode on May 25, 2011.

Can’t believe it’s been 25 years!

Any Oprah fan knows someone with her passion and energy never really retires, so a group called Saving America’s Mustangs is asking O to spend some of her newfound time to stop the roundup of wild horses in the West.

You may be interested to know that one of the main reasons the horses are rounded up is to save land they normally graze on for cattle. Yes, that’s right. It’s not just an animal welfare issue, it’s a vegetarian issue! If America were to suddenly lose interest in the regular burger and milkshake habit, perhaps the BLM (Bureau Land Management) would not care about horses munching on the land.

Over 100 years ago, there were several million horses roaming in the West. Today, that number has been reduced by 33,700 wild horses and 4,700 burros in 10 U.S. states.

“Oprah, I’m Boone Pickens and we’ve met in the past several times,” said the entrepreneur ranked as one of the richest in the U.S. and the world by Forbes. “And we need you so much on this project to save these mustangs. They’re beautiful animals. They’re in Nevada…The Bureau of Land Management is going in and spending 70 million dollars on these animals when they should be left alone. Let them stay on the free range.”

Several members of Saving America’s Mustangs speak on the video, emphasizing how the mustangs are a part of America’s heritage and a part of that heritage is at risk for disappearing if change doesn’t happen.

In addition to erasing a part of America’s heritage, roundups can be cruel and inhumane, injuring the horses during the process.

Oprah has shown her support in the past for animals, featuring segments on her show about pet adoption and puppy mills. Will she come forward and speak for the horses as well?
