“I try to make sure that I eat something green. I think that’s just a really good rule of thumb. I love all different kinds of vegetables, but the green ones are generally the best for you and the best for your diet.”

American Museum Of Natural History Hosts The Museum Gala

Kathy Freston had a chat with Dr. Dean Ornish, best known for his diet and lifestyle approach to treating  on protein, healthy body weight and weight loss.

Here are a few highlights:

On the dangers of animal protein:
DO: Diets that are high in animal protein are usually high in saturated fat, which promotes both heart disease and cancer. A recent study reviewed by Dr. Steven A. Smith in The New England Journal of Medicine found that high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets accelerate atherosclerosis (blockage in arteries) through mechanisms other than traditional risk factors such as changes in cholesterol and triglycerides.

Should you count calories or fat?
DO: In my experience, if you eat predominantly a whole foods, plant-based diet that is naturally high in fiber and low in fat and in refined carbohydrates, and if you eat it mindfully, you don’t have to count anything to lose weight. You feel full before you consume too many calories.

What are those good carbs again?
DO: Good carbs are whole foods. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and soy products in their natural, unrefined, unprocessed forms.

Because these good carbs are unrefined, they are naturally high in fiber as well. The fiber fills you up before you eat too much. For example, it’s hard to get too many calories from eating apples or whole grains, because apples are naturally low in calories and high in fiber, which causes you to feel full before you consume too many calories.

Mario Batali Takes Vegetable Challenge

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 12th, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink.

Carnivale du Vin Las Vegas

Mario Batali was given a vegetable challenge and he took it!

Food and Wine asked Batali to create three recipes featuring vegetables and to pair those meals with appropriate wines.

Batali hinted that he not only enjoyed the task, but personally feels vegetables should be the center of the meal.

“Protein has been intensely over-represented on the plate,” Batali said and added that the main course should be primarily from the “garden.”

Of course any seasoned vegetarian knows protein can be both represented on the plate and from the garden, given the numerous sources of plant proteins like chickpeas and beans.

One of Batali’s star vegetables was grilled asparagus with red pepper zabaglione, paired with a fruity Tuscan red wine.

Now you know asparagus can be paired with red wine, but can peas be paired as well?

Lake Bell Promises Vegan Big Mac If She Makes It Big In America

Special Screening Of "It's Complicated" - After Party

Lake Bell was recently on The Rachael Ray Show where she told the audience not only was she a vegan, but she’s also a foodie who loves to cook.

Not to mention she  made her most shocking confession yet.

She can give Ronald McDonald a run for his money.

“I heard that you make a vegan version of a Big Mac?” Rachael asked Lake.

“Everybody calm down, but it’s true!” Lake said.

Lake promised that if her new HBO series How To Make It In America does well, she’ll go back to the Rachael Ray Show and give everyone the recipe.

You know what that means.

Email your family, friends and neighbors to recruit them to be on the How To Make It In America street team to get the word out.

If everyone loves Lake, all the veggies can get their Big (faux) Mac on.
