Russia’s Prime Minster Vladimir Putin is known as a big cat lover. He’s recently organized a five day International Forum on Tiger Conservation that commenced on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Russia and involves leaders in conservation trying to solve the problem of saving tigers before they become extinct.

The conference will end with the goal of both saving tigers and increasing their numbers by the year 2022 by getting 13 countries with tiger populations to sign the St. Petersburg Declaration–an affirmation that they will work towards these goals.

Pamela Anderson Asks Putin For Help In Ending Canada Seal Slaughter

The Big Bluff Online Triva Game Launch Hosted By Perez Hilton

Pamela Anderson has asked Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for his help in ending the annual seal hunt in her home country of Canada.

Putin has already seen Russia end killing baby seals in their hunt and Anderson is hoping he will extend a hand in ending the Canadian one as well.

“My friends at PETA and I were pleased to see a recent slideshow spotlighting your fondness for animals. Since you’ve already banned the slaughter of baby seals in Russia, I’m writing to ask that you also ban seal-pelt imports from my native Canada, where almost all seals who are killed are three months of age or younger.”

PM Putin on working trip to Sochi

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made a stop by the Franz Josef Land, an island where scientists capture polar bears to collect data and tag them for surveillance before release back into the arctic.

While examining the giant creatures (a photograph of which can be found at The Guardian), Putin had this to say of the bear’s paws: “They’re heavy.”

Global warming has threatened several species on the island, including polar bears.

The tracking devices placed by researchers will allow them to monitor the extent the environmental change has had on the species.

According to Treehugger, the deputy director of Russia’s Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Vyacheslav Rozhnov said, “The reduction of the ice sheets, caused by climate change and human activities, is bringing about a global redistribution of polar bears, but no one knows how it is happening.”

Compounding this is barrels of discarded fuel left behind after the Cold War, a matter Putin says makes the arctic in need of a “general clean up.”

“From 40,000 to 60,000 tonnes of fuel and lubricants are being stored under inappropriate conditions, and the pollution exceeds maximum permissible levels by six times,” Putin said, according to The Guardian.

Rozhnov fears the pollutants from the leaking barrels of oil will threaten more animals, including whales and walruses.

Bridgitte Bardot Travels to Romania to Save Street Dogs

Not long ago, we brought you the wonderful news that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had banned hunting baby seals and was looking for a complete ban on all seal hunting.

Now animal rights activist and sex symbol of the 50s through 70s Brigitte Bardot is praising him as well.

“I really want to thank you and congratulate you for your willingness to denounce the hunting of young seals that you rightly call a bloody practice,” Bardot wrote in a letter to Putin, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

“Mr Prime Minister, you who remain the president of my heart, I want to thank you very sincerely for hearing my call.”

The letter was sent the day after Putin called for the ban of hunting seals under one year of age.

Props To Putin! Wants To End Russia’s Seal Hunt

Russian and Hungarian prime ministers meet for talks

A lot of talk goes on about Canada’s annual seal hunt, but did you know that Russia has one too?

And if Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has anything to do with it, the “bloody industry,” as he called it, will end soon.

Raise the roof for Russia!

“It is clear that [our hunt] should have been banned a long time ago,” Mr. Putin said, according to a statement distributed yesterday by the embassy in Ottawa.

Recently, Russia has stopped the killing of baby seals, or whitecoats. Now it’s looking to stop the killing of all seals, although a timeframe for this has not yet been established.

Proponents of seal hunts say it’s necessary to control the population. But Russia’s seal population has been declining since 1928. Not to mention the cruelness of the act, which involves clubbing a seal on its head repeatedly.

Canadian seal pelts are marketed to Russia, but no word on whether these will be banned as well. Some sources say that Russia is the #1 country behind China for imported seal pelt products.

The European Union is currently calling to ban the shipment of seal products across member countries.
