Kal Penn Won’t Smoke Marijuana At Your Burger Cookout

15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

If you invite Kal Penn over for dinner, don’t bother asking him to smoke marijuana afterwards.

Or eat burgers for dinner.

The Harold and Kumar star was known for getting stoned and eating White Castle burgers in the movie, and unfortunately Penn says this translates into some people thinking he’s like his character.

From The Insider:

“It’s sad for the people who offer me a joint because I don’t smoke weed in real life. I was also a vegetarian when we shot the first movie and that was about burgers. I don’t go out of my way to tell people I was a vegetarian or that I don’t smoke weed, because I don’t want them to be disappointed. If you want to keep the suspension of disbelief that’s OK, but then sometimes it’s weird.”

So there. The suspense is over.

Keep your burgers and your joints to yourself.

Penn recently left his job at the White House as Associate Director of Public Engagement to film the new Christmas themed Harold and Kumar movie.

During the Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle movie, Kal was given veggie burgers made to look real once he and co-star John Cho finally made it White Castle.

Woody Harrelson “Zombieland” Vegan Twinkie

Premiere of Sony Pictures' "Zombieland" - Arrivals

If you’ve seen Zombieland starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Einsenberg, you know that Woody gets his energy to run from the zombies by snacking on his favorite food of Twinkies.

In real life, Woody’s a raw vegan and regular Twinkies won’t cut it.

Just like Kal Penn had veggie burgers waiting for him at White Castle during the Harold and Kumar film, the directors on the set had specially made vegan Twinkies ready for Woody.

“They were actually edible for a guy like me,” Woody said.

Zombieland Twinkies were made from cornmeal and other vegan ingredients. This leads Woody to believe companies really can make healthy junk food if they put their mind to it.

“There’s a possibility that (manufacturer) Hostess could do a healthy Twinkie. It’s a thought.”

While they’re at it, can we get some vegan Ho-Hos too?

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle

Harold and Kumar fans, be on the lookout for another film from the duo, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas.

Vegetarian actor Kal Penn and co-star John Cho will begin filming early next year according to Entertainment Weekly. The film is set for release in November 2010.

By that time, Kal will have completed his White House stint as associate director in the White House Office of Public Liaison (OPL).

If you recall, in the first installment of the Harold and Kumar movies,  Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, when Harold and Kumar finally made it to the big castle, they gorged on little burgers.

The crew had some specially made vegetarian burgers for Kal, who played Kumar, to pig out on during the scene.

Kal is vegetarian for religious, ethical, and cultural reasons.

Veg Man Kal Penn Leaves Fox House For Obama’s White House

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 in Actors.

15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

Spoiler alert. If you didn’t watch this week’s episode of House, you might not want to read this.

Resident Lawrence Kutner, played by Kal Penn, tragically killed himself. So why did the Fox network writers need to take Kutner out? That’s because Penn’s leaving to work at the White House!

Penn worked on the Obama campaign last year and was offered a job as associate director in the White House Office of Public Liaison (OPL). From tv.yahoo.com:

“Growing up I always had two interests and two passions, one being public service and the other being arts and acting, so it’s always been on my mind, I always try to engage in different public service projects, and in the last 18 months having had the opportunity to serve on the Obama campaign, I certainly started thinking about that possibility…”

“What they [OPL] try and do is take the administration itself out of Washington, so they go into communities across the country, continue the sorts of dialogue people had started during the campaign and basically ensure that a bunch of citizens’ views about their elected officials, about their government are all happening and that they’re working effectively.”

Pennsylvania Street is far from Hollywood and so is the pay rate. Although Penn won’t be bringing in movie star bucks, he’s excited and grateful for the opportunity.

While this is wonderful news for Kal, it’s a little sad for House fans, especially considering there’s one less vegetarian on the show. Kal leaves behind Lisa Edelstein, Olivia Wilde, and Omar Epps to share a veggie pizza during long days on the set.

Kal played Kumar in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. At the end, where Harold and Kumar ate White Castle burgers, Kal bit into veggie burgers instead.
