Sir Paul McCartney is scheduled to speak at a European Parliament hearing on December 3 2009 to discuss how eating less meat can fight global warming.

The Global Warming and Food Policy: Less Meat = Less Heat will feature both Paul and Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, urging legislators to encourage people to fight climate change, which includes eating less meat.

The hearing takes place from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Parliament’s plenary chamber and will be chaired by Vice-President Edward McMillan-Scott.

A press conference featuring Paul and Dr. Pachauri will follow.

Hope the Parliament listens to the two notable speakers.

In 2006, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization concluded that producing the world’s beef and pork generates 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions versus the 13% generated by all the world’s cars, planes, trains and boats.

Al Gore recently agreed he should have spoken more about the effects of meat eating and the environment.

But that hasn’t stopped PETA Queen Ingrid Newkirk from rubbing in his lack of outspokenness and humiliation during the recent debate where he admitted his faults.

From an article at Huffingtonpost.com titled “Come On Al, Steak or the Earth?”:

“That’s why he has only himself to blame for the blows dealt him this week from the BBC’s Mr. Paxman, ABC’s Ms. Sawyer and other commentators. Yes, he’s the son of a Black Angus rancher. My father climbed mountains and went out in to the ocean in small boats during storms, but I’m not following suit. He protests that eating meat is a “personal choice” and tries to excuse his penchant for a daily steak (sometimes two, we hear from a reliable source) because he finds it “too hard” to “give up” meat? Driving a Hummer for the hell of it is a personal choice, and how hard can it be to go vegetarian when this week’s New York Times list of best-selling hardback advice books shows chef Tal Ronnen’s The Conscious Cook sitting pretty at number three and Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Diet at number five? Both are vegan — not just vegetarian — cookbooks that I dare anyone to open without drooling. Last week, Chipotle at Dupont Circle in Washington test-marketed a Gardein vegan “chicken” burrito. It sold out almost instantly, and an emergency supply of these delicious little medallions of soy protein had to be dispatched to meet demand.”

No one says it quite like Ingrid!

The drummer of the all vegetarian band Rise Against, Brandon Barnes, sat down for a little one on one chit chat with tomtimms.com where he talked about how easy it is to be veg and gave some thoughts on global warming and Sarah Palin.

This isn’t the first time Brandon has expressed himself on the 2008 vice presidential candidate. She must stir up a world of opinions!

So it was sorta by chance you all were vegetarians and had the same beliefs.
Yeah we all have same politics, not all bands have that dynamic. We’re all veggie and minded on those beliefs.

How is it on the road and finding the grub.
Well the catering is all veggie, restaurants are very accommodating to vegetarians. We can get pasta and veggie burgers. Most major cities now have vegetarian restaurants.

What do you think about Governor Palin talking about the ice glacier’s not melting due to Global Warming.
Yeah I saw the skit with Tina Fey on SNL, one of her lines was “There isn’t global warning, its just god hugging us a little tighter”. Most of the major scientist in the world agree that global warming is the cause, so you can’t really argue against it as its pretty much fact. I think alot of the Republicans wanna believe it’s not. Climate change does go in cycles, however they wanna keep drilling. What happened to the battery operated car, it’s a possibility. There are all these people who own oil and sell oil there keeping things like that from developers as they wanna make more money. Sarah Palin probably does know.

Paul McCartney has been outspoken on the effects of a vegetarian diet and the planet, advocating people to cut meat from their diet for one day of the week to produce significant environmental improvements. Now he’s teaming up with a scientist who will back up his word even more.

In a letter to The Independent, McCartney and Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), write:

“Unfortunately, with higher incomes, societies, even in developing countries, are turning to greater … consumption of animal protein, which reduces the availability of food grains for direct consumption by impoverished human beings.”

“Already 60 per cent of food crop production in North America and western Europe is being diverted for production of meat.”

Both McCartney and the scientist are vegetarians, with Paul being one for 30 years and Dr. Pachauri for eight.

The letter goes on to cite evidence of meat consumption destroying the environment such as a 2006 report by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, which stated 70% of former forests in the Amazon have been turned over to grazing and livestock now use 30% of the world’s land surface.
