Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 in Events, Food & Drink.

Looking for some great veg food and accessories, a chance to mingle with fellow veggies, and catch a glimpse of famous vegs like Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman and Dr. Michael Gregor of the Humane Society of the United States.

Look no further than the D.C. VegFest.

The event will take place at the University Yard at George Washington University Saturday, September 12, from noon to 6:00 p.m., rain or shine.

A collaboration of the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organizations, Compassion Over Killing and the Vegetarian Society of D.C, D.C. VegFest will offer participants lesson in preparing vegetarian meals, information of environmental issues, politics, and vegan products such as cosmetics and animal treats.

And the first 400 visitors will receive a free commemorative bag filled with food samples, coupons, and information about vegetarian eating.

A free bag of goodies?

Time to line up at D.C. VegFest like consumers looking for Tickle Me Elmo at department stores during the Holidays

“Choosing vegetarian foods is one of the best ways we can protect our health, the planet, and animals,” says Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing. “The DC VegFest highlights just how fun, easy, and delicious it is to feast on meat-free fare.”

MTV Cannes Party 2003

Not long ago, we brought you the news that MTV would be airing a series of pro-vegetarian ads sponsored by animal rights group Compassion Over Killing (COK).

The group started airing such ads back in 2004, and recently launched their 2009 campaign, which feature the gruesome, behind the scenes look at factory farms.

So how has it been going?

For the most part, good, according to Erica Meier, executive director of COK, who was recently interviewed by QSR magazine. A few highlights from the interview:

Why air them almost exclusively on MTV?
Studies have shown that teen and young-adult audiences are most receptive to a message of vegetarian eating. They’re more willing to explore new foods and change their diets.

Why do the commercials focus so heavily on graphic images of animal cruelty?
Since most people will never visit a factory farm, and since the industry attempts to keep a lot of these practices well hidden behind closed doors, we are striving to bring the factory farms to the audiences to show them that this is the reality of where our food is coming from.

Hooray for Compassion Over Killing for reaching out to the younger crowd. And sure, the Jonas Brothers are cute and all, but you really need a break from them every once in awhile.

MTV: Video Did Not Kill The Vegetarian Star

MTV Cannes Party 2003

MTV will be showing a series of pro-vegetarian commercials running over the next five weeks.

The ads will give a behind the scenes view of what goes on in factory farms with the TryVeg.com web address displayed on the screen for those who want more information.

According to Vegan.com, this release was made by Compassion Over Killing member Erica Meier:

“Our 2009 MTV Pro-Veg Ad campaign launches tonight: viewers around the country will see, perhaps for their first time, a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the cruel world of factory farming—and they’ll be further directed to visit our website TryVeg.com for more information.”

MTV is becoming more known for its skits and shows than music, so who knows where this initial vegetarian campaign might lead to. We’re thinking a “30 Days of Veg” for the hardcore steak eater might make for some interesting Reality TV.
