Charlotte Ronson Runway Show

Lilo’s main squeeze, Samantha Ronson, like many other gay and lesbians in California, was not too pleased to hear that Proposition 8, which amends the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman was passed.

However, another measure, Proposition 2, which allows some farm animals to move around more freely, was passed as well. And that just pisses Ronson off. On her Myspace blog, an entry titled, “2 steps forward…2 steps back,”she wrote:

“i guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that’s really sad to me.”

“yes, i am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but i just think it’s frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow’s dinner than for the chef.”

“yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married…”

In response, Peta has sent Ronson a letter asking her to understand the importance of Prop 2, and asking for her support as they continue to support the fight of discrimination against gays:

“Abusing animals is always wrong, and discriminating against gays is always wrong. We’ll continue to fight against the ban on gay marriage, and we hope that we can have your support in our efforts to eliminate cruelty to animals.”

Granted, you could understand Ronson’s anger. But is it necessary to take things out on Miss Piggy? Treating animals kindly says a lot about a society’s values and voting for Prop 2 doesn’t mean voting against gays and lesbians.

Hopefully, Sam will cool down in a few days and realize that progress in any matter takes time. It was time for Miss Piggy this year. And hopefully, it will come time for every oppressed and discriminated group to receive fair, equal, and compassionate treatment.

YES! on Prop 2 Campaign to stop Animal Cruelty Event - Beverly Hills, CA

Prop 2 was passed in California! This was a vote to change the way certain animals (breeding pigs, veal calves, and hens laying eggs) were kept in farms-allowing them more movement and freedom.

Farmers have to get it together by the year 2015 (it will take time to make all necessary changes).

Dozens of celebrities voiced their opinions in favor of Prop 2 including Moby,  Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi and Tobey Maguire to name a few.

And the countdown begins!

Jada Pinkett-Smith Regrets Caging Boa Constrictor

Women In Film's 2008 Crystal Lucy Awards - Arrivals

Well, maybe she regrets buying a boa constrictor because it has to stay in a cage. Letting an animal like that roam around the house might bring surprises during your 2am snack time.

Actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, wife of Will Smith, bought a red-tailed boa constrictor named Beauty. Having to keep Beauty in a cage for most of the time has made Jada sympathetic to the conditions caged animals live in and she vows to never buy an animal that has to be confined like that again.

She told Contact Music, “I think I’ll never get an animal like a snake again where I have to keep her in an aquarium.”

“We have this whole thing for Beauty outside for her, to be in a natural habitat. But at the end of the day, she knows she’s caged into her aquarium.”

In addition, she told her daughter, Willow, “we won’t do this again and won’t have any animals that need to stay like that.”

The experience has made her think about becoming an animal activist in the years to come.

We wonder if the Mrs. Fresh Prince knows that an easy way to become an activist, of course, is to reduce or cut the consumption of animals from your diet.

Not to worry. Once Pamela Anderson gets word, we’re sure she’ll jump on the chance to help fellow mom Jada make any transitions she needs to become a full-fledged activist.

“My exhibitionism can be a great vehicle – here are the boobs, now let’s talk about animal experimentation.”

—-Pamela Anderson, in an interview admitting she’s likes dressing sexy and getting attention and that it can be helpful when trying to get people to pay attention to issues she’s talking about.

It definitely gets discussion going. Whether or not the conversation and thoughts are about animal rights is yet to be determined.

Emily Deschanel Talking For Turkeys At Farm Sanctuary Celebration

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Ellen DeGeneres And Portia de Rossi Host Yes! On Prop 2 Party

Turkeys can’t talk (at least not in a manner we can understand yet), so Emily Deschanel, or Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan as most of us know her on “Bones,” will be talking for them.

David Boreanaz’s co-star will be a guest speaker at Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration For The Turkeys in California on November the 11th.

Since so many turkeys are consumed around this time of year, the event is meant to raise awareness of the abuse that occurs on farms and in factories.

Although she doesn’t have any turkey pets (as of yet), Emily is a sponsor of Stacey, a pig that resides on the Sanctuary in California and she’s sponsored other animals for friends.

With her star status, combined with intelligence and eloquence, she may very well have the power to convince people to pardon more turkeys that all presidents combined.

Singer Pink To Animal Hunter Prince William: How Rude!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 24th, 2008 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Pink performs live on Sunrise

Pink is officially pissed at the Prince.

When singer Pink asks a question, she expects to get a response. And if five years later, you haven’t replied, don’t think she’ll forget about it.

Feel sorry for the next date that doesn’t return her phone call.

Prince William once asked Alecia Moore, or Pink as we know her, if she would perform at his 21st birthday bash. She turned him down and questioned his stance on hunting. Five years to date, he hasn’t spoke up and she wants to know why.

“It’s a bit rude, isn’t it?” she said on TeenMusic.com.

Being the animal rights activist she is, Pink had other issues with some stuff going on where Big Ben’s home sits. Like the fact that bearskins on the palace guards’ hats weren’t made from synthetic material. This question she posed for the Prince’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

You guessed it, it was like grandmother like grandson.

The fact the she challenged the royal family of all people really doesn’t make her blink twice.

“I want to make people think about their responsibilities. I don’t care if they have a crown.”

Ingrid Newkirk Talks Michael Vick, Breast Milk Flavored Ice Cream

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 24th, 2008 in Animal Issues, Authors.

PETA?s 15th Anniversary Gala and Humanitarian Awards - Show

We just found a fantastic Time Magazine article on Ingrid Newkirk where she answers 10 questions from people all around the country about PETA, vegetarianism, and animal rights, just to name a few.

Some highlights include her feelings about Michael Vick, who was sentenced to prison for his role in dog fighting.

“I have spoken to Michael, and I know he’s contrite. I believe when we see him emerge from jail that he’s going to have a strong message for inner-city youth,” she said.

She also addresses that ridiculous idea that Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream should start using breast milk in their products after discovering a Swiss restaurant had done the same.

“It isn’t very feasible at all, but it was great fun to suggest it to Ben & Jerry’s, who also knew it was a joke. What was serious was that television stations listened to our reasons why making anything out of cow’s milk is unkind. Calves are taken away from their mothers and used for veal. We drink the milk meant for those little calves.”

Oh, yes, of course…We TOTALLY knew it was a joke.

Go here to read the rest of the questions and learn how Ingrid and the folks at PETA have a million dollar reward to the first scientist who can come up with in vitro meat, meat grown from cells from a small group of animals in the laboratory, which means no more killing and more cleanliness. Quick, grab your geek friends from college and high school and find some way to convince them to do this and split the reward with you.

20th Anniversary Genesis Awards - Arrivals

“Yes, Yes, Yes for Prop 2 for every reason. It’s good for the animals, the planet, your heart, the environment – it’s so important. It’s sets a precedent that’s brand new, which is just that we’re gonna change a system that been in place for a long time, that’s so suppressive and so hidden, just because we think it’s wrong…and that’s beautiful! That’s like a shift in human consciousness. And everyone can be a part of it.”

—-Persia White, in an interview with Ecorazzi. Prop 2 is a California ballot measure that would prohibit some farm animals from being confined so that they cannot move around freely.
