Chrissie Hynde Unveils New PETA Advert

Vegan Rocker Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders opened a vegan restaurant a little under a year ago, The Vegiterranean, in her hometown of Akron, Ohio. It features vegan Italian food such as vegetarian Penne Chicken Pesto – Gardein (Garden Grown-therefore plant based) Chicken with Pesto and Penne Pasta and many other Italian dishes you can get with “Rawmesan” toppings.

Last weekend, The Vegiterranean, put 2 of its vegan burgers in the National Hamburger Festival to show who’s really got the (un) beef.

Before the festival began, Executive Chef Scott Jones told the Akron Beacon Journal, The Vegiterranean’s burgers were, “packed full of goodness and love,” in addition to being 100 percent free of any animal products, cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat.

Liz Hurley Turns Selfridges Pink In Aid Of Breast Cancer Awareness

Celebrities can be either praised or condemned by groups like PETA for their actions involving animals and the planet. In this case, Liz Hurley is getting the latter of the treatment as she is being criticized for using meat in her upcoming line of pre-packaged meals, advertised as both “healthy” and “low-fat.”

“Animal products, which are typically loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol, are far from being healthy,” said Yvonne Taylor, PETA representative, in a written letter.

“Won’t you please consider promoting a truly healthy, low-fat vegetarian diet? A vegetarian diet not only reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease and numerous other life-threatening illnesses but is also a far kinder diet for animals who need not have their lives cut short to please our palates.”

PETA is also urging Hurley to spare the life of a piglet that she is rearing on her personal farm.

“Just as you would cringe at shipping Emily (Hurley’s dog) off to slaughter, you should also be reluctant to betray a pig who you have cared for and befriended.”

No word on the type of meal Hurley plans to use the piglet for, but we can’t help but agree with the last statement and think Hurley should keep pets off the plate.

Alicia Silverstone’s Dogs Don’t Need Beano Anymore

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Peta

I am Alicia Silverstone and I am a vegetarian. My dog is also vegan and has stopped farting tremendously.

Ok, so maybe we made up the last line or maybe…it was edited before the photo went to press.

Not long ago, Alicia Silverstone said in an interview with Graham Norton that she switched her dogs to a vegan diet and since then, they don’t have nearly as much gas.

While starting a veg diet may do the opposite for humans until they adjust, Silverstone’s dogs have done quite well. “All four of my dogs are vegan, they don’t fart anymore,” she said.

Silverstone has been very passionate about spreading the veg news, including working with Peta.

Note: While dogs can do well with vegan diets, it is not recommended for cats, since essential nutrients they need, such as taurine, are found in meat products. Cats are carnivores at heart. We also don’t advise giving your dog Beano unless a vet’s ok’d it. This was brought to you today by Vegetarian Star Public Service Announcement for Cat and Dog Health.

Duh Moby! Buy Cast Iron For Your Kitchen!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, July 21st, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Epicurious

Epicurious.com has a feature on their website where celebrities, such as Lisa Loeb, Gabrielle Reece, and vegan Moby take you on a tour of their kitchens.

When Moby opened his refrigerator to the camera we spied awesome goodies such as Amy’s Salsa, Eden Soy Milk, and Ezekiel Bread. There is also a Homer Simpson toy on the counter, but don’t ask us what it’s used for!

Some of his favorite utensils include a white pot which he thinks was handed down by his grandfather. He is also a fan of the microwave because it’s helpful for those with hangovers who still need good food such as burritos.

Moby griped about how non-stick skillets wear away over time and hinted at how the chemicals must be transferring from the skillet to our bodies. Duh! Just go buy yourself some cast iron skillets.

Is Carole King a veg? We haven’t found a source that says so, but 4 years ago she was campaigning for John Kerry and reported as eating a veggie sandwich from Subway.

“When I came in ’84, I came for a candidate I really cared about,” King said while eating a vegetarian sandwich from Subway on Kerry’s campaign bus. “And I’m here again for a candidate I really care about that I really think can do the job America needs.” King was referring to Colorado Senator Gary Hart when she spoke of 1984.

It appears she’s back in New Hampshire, putting in her support for Obama for the next couple of days.

While we don’t know if she’s completely veg, we salute this Natural Woman for choosing healthy on that day!

The Ultimate 'Green' Room Eco Lounge Emmy Gift Suite - Day 1

You may remember Vanessa A. Williams from shows like Melrose Place and Soulfood.

Last month she attended the Caribbean Fashion Week and spoke to the Jamaica Gleaner about her favorite Jamaican veggie dishes.

“My favourite Jamaican foods are ackee and callaloo. I am a vegan, so I don’t eat saltfish. During my visit, I am, looking forward to plantain, rice and peas and, of course, ackee and callaloo. I even stopped at a vegetarian restaurant after I landed to get ackee but they did not have it, so I am definitely going back to get it before I leave.”

Besides talking veggie, she also mentioned she loves her “skinny jeans” and can’t do without earrings.

Lokah Music Presents The Release Of

Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons is an outspoken vegan who was once quoted as saying, “I don’t eat anything that runs away from me,” to describe his diet.

His name was dropped by a chef at “Nick and Toni’s” Restaurant in East Hampton, NY. The restaurant is celebrating its 20th birthday and Chef Joseph Realmuto spoke with the New York Times regarding sometimes difficult customers. “The celebrities are not the fussy ones,” Realmuto said. “It’s the others, who want to feel like celebrities, who are the fussy ones.”

The article then said that Realmuto does make “special vegan risotto for Simmons”.

Fussy? So that’s what they think of us when we demand a list of ingredients and what surfaces things are cooked on, and a million other questions about the orgins of “natural flavors.”

VegetarianStar thinks all vegs in NY and across the nation should go to Nick and Toni’s and every other restaurant and start acting like a celebrity.
