Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival 2006 - Day 1

We brought you the, cough, cough, delicious details of Chris Walla’s Peanut Butter Veggie Sausage Toast Recipe. Yes, that’s right. Peanut butter and vegetarian sausage. Mmmm…yummy.

We have not been brave enough to attempt it yet, but the folks over at Sprig.com have. And they posted a pretty picture. Not only that, but they’re saying it tastes “pretty good.”

So hats off to them for being so brave, and if you’re still interested in being brave, have at it for the recipe.

Paltrow Pretty Much Vegetarian Except For Big Fat Turkey

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Two Lovers Paris Premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow took some heat not too long ago for posing draped in fur in an ad for Tod’s clothing. She’s recently given a public apology to her green and vegetarian fans and PETA, saying the fur was thrown over her at the last minute and she thought it was fake.

She told PETA, her and her husband, Coldplay front man Chris Martin, are “pretty much vegetarians,” and “we know it’s the best diet for us and our kids, and of course for animals and the environment.”

However, it seems as if she should have followed up the statement with, “Except for Thanksgiving, when we chow down on that fat bird.” In an article in the Huffington Post, she writes:

“Turkey will always be the main event of Thanksgiving (at least in my house) and a whole turkey is the way to go if you’re feeding at least 12. But if your party is smaller, the stuffed turkey breast turns out to be a great halfway point. Brining it overnight insures that you don’t need to baste it and it has a quick cooking time. Why should things be any less festive if dinner is just for two? I came up with these stuffed turkey burgers which were a giant hit in my house. They are the perfect solution for anyone who isn’t feeding a big group (or for a big group that wants to try something different!).”

Not only is she admitting to bringing bird into her home during Thanksgiving, but even giving you instructions for how to grind it and make patties.

While her and Chris may entertain family that eat turkey and they’re expected to cook it, considering her track record, she should probably be avoiding talking turkey patties on such as widely read blog.

Better yet, put some recipes up there for Tofurky patties! And make it for your house guests too.

REM’s Michael Stipe, Peter Buck Have Vegetarian Code Words

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

2008 Voodoo Experience - Day 3

Singer Michael Stipe and guitarist Peter Buck of the musical group REM are both vegetarians, so it shouldn’t come as a surprised that they’d be concerned about the food options while on tour, whether it’d be backstage or in a hotel.

When Stipe and Buck took part in a discussion before a show about how much fruit and vegetarian food was going to be at an after party, a journalist joked that maybe these terms meant something else. In the world of rock and roll, there are often code words for drugs, alcohol, and women.

Nope. Fruits and veggies really do mean fruits and veggies. Boring, but true.

“It’s about respect,” Buck said, referring to ensuring vegetarian options were available.

Stipe once owned a vegetarian restaurant and juice bar in Athens, Georgia, where the group all met up as students. It closed, but he is now the owner of the building which houses The Grit, a successful veg eatery in the same town.

“I think that the only reason I don’t look like I’m a 130 years old after a lifetime of touring so much and living in hotel rooms, and drinking too much, is that I’ve been a vegan now for 22 years.

Normally friends of mine, when they wake up and they’re hungover, they go out and have bacon and eggs and smoke cigarettes. When I wake up, I have a smoothie and vegan burritos.”

Wolfgang Puck Catering Did Veg Dinner For Lint Roller Party

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 in Chefs, Food & Drink.

Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences Wine Preview

The relationship with the Veg Star and celebrity chefs has been a roller coaster lately. Love, hate, love, hate.

Awhile back, we hated Gordon Ramsay for his less than kind remarks about vegetarians and what he would do if his children became one. Then, we loved Rachael Ray for putting an entire chapter of vegetarian recipes in her new cookbook and featuring hottie vegan rocker Bryan Adam’s Juice Recipe in Everyday With Rachael Ray. Recently, Paul Deen made us steam when we found out she delivered 25,000 pounds of ham to a food bank.

But we’re feeling love again, thanks to Wolfgang Puck.  Puck’s catering company provided the vegetarian meal for the 15th Annual Lint Roller party, which several vegetarian celebs attended, including Lisa Edelstein and Emmylou Harris. The event served to raise money to assist in providing better treatment for animals, including helping getting rescue dogs adopted.

But this isn’t Puck’s first time around the veggie block. Last year, he created an Animal Welfare Program for himself and his 137 restaurants and catering venues, which consisted of various measures to support the humane treatment of animals and offer only all-natural and organic food.

Some highlights of the program were eliminating foie gras from his restaurants. Foie gras is produced when ducks or geese are stuffed to the point of where their livers swell 10 times the normal size. He also increased the number of vegetarian options on the menus and vowed not to use eggs from laying hens confined in battery cages.

He’s catered vegetarian meals for big events in the past, including a party in Beverly Hills that kicked off the 2007 Genesis Awards, which recognizes news and media organizations that produce work which brings awareness to animal issues.

Puck’s not the only one wanting to drink to the occasion. Thanks to the Wolf for bringing back the veg love for celebrity chefs!

You can’t go wrong with a FUR: Get me not greeting which features the sexy Christina Applegate reminding them to cross fur off their holiday wish lists.

While you’re entertaining, treat the guests to her vegan Sweetest Thing Truffles. They’re made with no butter and vegan cream cheese, and of course, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! Go here for the recipe.

Being dairy free, you can welcome these truffles during the holidays without welcoming both the cholesterol and environmental impact that comes with the energy demand of harvesting animal products.

Alicia Silverstone To Publish Vegan Diet And Fitness Book

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 in Actresses, Authors, Food & Drink.

Celebrities At The Galaxy vs. Chelsea FC

Move over skinny bitches. Alicia Silverstone is out to prove Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin aren’t the only vegan gals who can give advice about weight loss.

Silverstone’s book, “The Kind Diet,” will be published in the fall of 2009. The book aims to show how your diet both affects your feelings of well being and the environment. Included is a 3-Step program to a better you as well as 75 macrobiotic and vegan recipes.

Director of Rodale publishing company, Pam Krauss said, “Just as importantly, she really makes the plant-based foods that are the cornerstone of her diet sound delicious and indulgent, and her enthusiasm for her program is infectious.”

Silverstone is very outspoken about her veganism and has worked with PETA in the past. She’s even gone so far as to put her dogs on a vegan diet. Could a vegan dog treats cookbook be in the works as well?

The terms of the book deal are not yet disclosed, and neither are any of the recipes. We’re hoping Raw Balls make the cut.
