Quantcast Vegetarian StarAlicia Silverstone Poses Vegan Breast Milk Sharing Program On “Kind Life”

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone frequently uses her website The Kind Life to discuss veganism and motherhood and she recently asked readers what they thought of a vegan breast milk sharing program for vegan mothers who are unable to breast feed on their own.

The actress was informed of one vegan woman who had underwent surgery and was unable to produce enough milk to nurse.

Writes Silverstone on The Kind Life:

“A lot of women unfortunately have a similar struggle, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to give their babies the most amazing start in life with clean, mean, glorious breast milk. It’s why I’m starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area. If you have milk to share–post it! If you are in need of milk–post it! Think of all the babies we can help raise together!”

According to Jenn Savedge at Mother Nature Network, the idea of breast milk sharing is not new, nor it is something restricted to fringe, hippie groups. Savedge donated milk through a program at Duke University Medical Center designed for premature infants and babies who’s mothers were otherwise unable to donate.

Screenings and restrictions for such programs are obviously in place and healthy mothers are the ones who support such children in need. It doesn’t seem far fetched that a group with a vegan interest could set up headquarters in or be supervised under a medical group to ensure there is a supply of vegan breast milk as well.
