Mark Bittman already has a pretty flexible vegan eating plan.

Eat what you want (sensibly) at dinnertime, but every meal before 6:00 P.M. should be vegan.

Can there be any more wiggle room for the flexitarian not willing to give up all animal products?

During an interview on Huffington Post Live, Bittman reveals yes–if you’re willing to cheat.

“Yes, I put milk in my coffee in the morning,” Bittman said. “Real vegans don’t, but I’m not a real vegan….On strict days, [I eat] no dairy, no animal products at all, no processed food, no white food like white rice, pasta, bread, etc..”

Yes, a little dairy here and there for the unofficial vegans won’t undermine your health and animal welfare efforts.

And if there’s any question about what he’s hinting too, here it is again:

“I mean, cheat. There’s a certain amount of cheating that’s built in and acceptable. But it depends how seriously you want to take it: do you want to lose weight or do you want to have a generally healthier lifestyle? If you want to lose weight, stricter is better.”

If you cheated this morning with your cereal, watch the interview at Huffington Post and share your transgressions with a fellow (part-time) vegan sinner.
