Leilani Munter has commended Harris Teter for its decision to end gestation crates for its pork suppliers.
The supermarket chain joins at least 50 other food companies like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and Kroger is making the change the impacts the welfare of these farm animals.
“Like so many Americans, I’m concerned with how pigs are treated by the pork industry,” vegetarian Münter said.
“Thanking a company like Harris Teeter for taking social responsibility seriously is the least I can do to show my support for their work to improve life for pigs and other farm animals.”
The change reflects a movement that is both at the private and legislative level.
According to the Humane Society, nine U.S. states have passed laws to ban the gestation crate confinement of breeding pigs.
Several other pork producers are working to end the use of crates in their facilities. Smithfield and Hormel, two leading U.S. producers, have pledged to end crates by 2017.
