Olympic Athletes Following Plant-Based Diets

Fox News simply puts one of them in the category of “9 Athletes on Weird Diets,” but you may be pleasantly surprised to hear there are several potential Olympian champions who follow a vegetarian or mostly plant-based diet.

Gulf News profiles several Olympic athletes and their food regimes. Those who power up with plants include USA Swimmer Garrett Weber-Gale and USA Marathon Runner Michael Arstein.

Weber-Gale, founder of a site on healthy eating, Athletic Foodie, eats a typical lunch of, “asparagus, apples, walnuts, prunes, and a veggie burger or tacos with rice and beans. After weightlifting, it is an energy bar, dry fruit and another shake, before a dinner of kale or spinach and a big salad with brown rice, millet, barley, red or kidney beans.”

Weber-Gale could be considered the opposite of a weekday vegetarian, rather a “once a week meatatarian,” as he will consume lean proteins like fish only one day a week.

Arnstein began his vegetarian journey during his teens to improve his athletic performance. He became a strict vegan at age 26, and now follows an 80/10/10 raw diet where he eats “80 per cent fruit and vegetables, 10 per cent protein and 10 per cent fat.”

Venus Williams, profiled at Fox, will probably be loading up on, “green juices, sprout salads and lentils” before heading to the tennis courts in London.
