Quantcast Vegetarian StarScott Jurek Turns To Turmeric For Food Medicine

Scott Jurek

Scott Jurek sees a vegan diet not only as a way to power his 100+ mile runs when healthy, but also as a way to recover from the occasional injury.

He told Vegetarian Times one of his favorite ways to use “food as medicine” is adding the spice turmeric to a dish.

“It’s a great anti-inflammatory,” Jurek said of the condiment he used after sustaining an ankle sprain. “One of my smoothie recipes contains turmeric and ginger as an antidote to help with inflammation.”

Wellness expert Dr. Andrew Weil agrees and recommends taking turmeric supplements for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including arthritis, tendonitis and auto immune disorders.

“Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts (available in tablets or capsules) three times per day or as directed on the product label,” writes Weil.

“Whole turmeric is more effective than isolated curcumin, its major constituent. Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Be patient: the full benefit takes two months to develop. Don’t use turmeric if you have gallstones or bile duct dysfunction. Pregnant women shouldn’t use it without their doctors’ approval. In rare cases, extended use can cause stomach upset or heartburn.”

Turmeric can be tastier if sprinkled over an actual meal. Try it in Indian dishes, mock egg salad recipes and vegetable side dishes.
