The Last Heart Attack with Dr. Sanjay Gupta is now available in its full segment at CNN.

Bill Clinton was a featured guest, and he discussed his motivations for adopting a vegan diet.

As it turns out, it wasn’t just the former President that made some changes as veggie burgers were added to the White House menu.

Dr. Gupta talks with heart experts about the importance of diet for preventing heart troubles and the issue of good vs. bad cholesterol comes up.

LDL or low-density lipoprotein is considered “bad” and you should run from it like a cow who’s just escaped a slaughterhouse. HDL, on the other hand, helps protect the heart when its levels are raised.

The best way to lower LDL cholesterol is to lower your fork to pick different items off your plate.

Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, recommends swapping, “sources of saturated fat, such as red meat and dairy products, with sources of healthy fats, such as nuts and soy products.”

Vegetarians and vegans will automatically have lower cholesterol levels that meat eaters. While the average meat eater’s cholesterol level is 210, the average vegetarian’s cholesterol is 161 and the average vegan’s is 133.
