Jamie Oliver has had some trouble convincing the Los Angeles Unified School District to let him snoop in its cafeterias, but a recent decision by the board to overhaul the food system, along with a statement from LAUSD officials praising Oliver’s efforts, shows the district at least has the sense to listen to what the British celebrity chef has to say.

Approving a 5-year contract this week, LAUSD officials gave the boot to flavored milk and other processed foods and added soy milk and other vegetarian options to the menus.

A spokesperson for LAUSD commended Oliver for helping with the transition:

“Jamie Oliver provided the opportunity to focus on an area that could contribute to ongoing district initiatives, which included the recommendation for the removal of flavored milk with added sugars. Our goal, in tandem with Jamie Oliver, is to continue to serve healthy and nutritious meals.”

As Oliver has pointed out many times to the media, flavored milks such as chocolate and strawberry often have as much sugar in one serving as a can of soda. And with so many children and teenagers being lactose intolerant, the approval of soy milk as a non-dairy beverage shows LAUSD is making good progress to serve the nutritional needs of its students.

The approved plan, voted 5-2 by the board also puts more vegetarian items on the menus.
