My NYC Biking Story: Sarinya Srisakul from Streetfilms on Vimeo.
She’s tough. She darts through traffic effortlessly, whether it’s on a bicycle or a big red truck. Her “hose” is probably bigger than yours. Did we also mention that Sarinya Srisakul, New York city’s first Asian-American female firefighter, is also a vegan?
Srisakul rides her bike to the station, sometimes carrying her equipment on her back for 10 miles from Elmhurst, Queens to the East Village in Manhattan. Somewhere in that backpack probably lies a few handfuls of nuts, dried fruit and an almond butter sandwich.
“I love riding a bike,” Srisakul says in the video. “It’s a great way to stay in shape, it’s a great way to see the world, it’s faster than taking the subway.”
And while public transporation is greener than a personal vehicle, a vegan on a bike pretty much takes the championship cup in the lighter footprint category.
Vegan firefighter and author of The Engine 2 Diet Rip Esselstyn changed the lives of the men and women at his station in Texas after putting them on a vegan diet. It’s time for the men and women of FDNY to follow Srisakul’s lead and get plant strong too!
