Quantcast Vegetarian StarChase Utley PETA Ad Hits Home Run For Adopted Animals (Video)

The Philadelphia Phillies have already won vegetarians fans by offering faux chicken sandwiches, vegan rice krispie treats and mock crab cakes at their home playing field of Citizens Bank Park. Now, the Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has really hit a home run with animal lovers by starring in a PSA for adopting pets.

“I realized, there’s so many homeless animals [who] need love and need attention—it’s just better to adopt,” said Utley.

“As a baseball player, there’s many nights where I come home and, you know, I’ve had a tough game, but seeing his face, it just kind of puts that behind you a little bit.”

Posing with his rescue dog Jack, who is a child of two dogs that were confiscated from a dog fighting ring, Utley wants fans to know that “buying animals is killing animals.” In fact, it’s killing about 3-4 million every year after sitting in shelters but never finding homes.

“There’s so many dogs and cats that don’t have homes. It’s really sad to see.”

Both Utley and his wife Jen volunteer with the Pennsylvania SPCA and founded Utley All-Star Animals, an annual event that raises money to end animal abuse in Pennsylvania.

When asked about the Phillies’ veggie options, Utley replied, “I have not had the opportunity to try anything in the ballpark and I was unaware that they are the best vegetarian ballpark in the country. I think that’s pretty cool.”
