America’s Next Great Restaurant has narrowed things down to 10 finalists and already eliminated one of them.

What’s positive about someone going home? It wasn’t the chef with the vegetarian restaurant idea!

Sudhir Kandula had pushed for a vegetarian Indian menu early in the competition.

Of course, he wasn’t welcomed with open arms.

On the show, judge Bobby Flay questioned Kandula’s ability to maintain business without serving meat and pressured Kandula to put a few meat dishes on the menu. He’s also been ridiculed by bloggers.

It’s good to know Kandula tried to refuse at first, but ultimately promised Flay he’d put a few  meat items on the menu and this may have put him in the top 10. Kandula is still going strong with his concept, as Fran Harris’ Championship Chicken didn’t take home any trophies on the most recent episode and she was sent to pack her knives and go home.

After looking at Kandula’s menu, however, it appears he can take the heat from Flay’s grill without having a complete meltdown. His main offering, the Tiffin Box, is still veggie strong. Spicy green beans with toasted coconut, chapattis griddled with ghee, cucumber raita, and a fennel/citrus salad make up his concept of a healthy, Indian vegetarian eatery.

With eight contestants to knock off, we hope Kandula stays plant-strong and the only meat his cooks is the competition!
