Kathy Freston “Vanity Fair” Vegan Monologues Reveal Progress Not Perfection

Kathy Freston‘s interview with Vanity Fair for its February 2011 issue is posted online in an article aptly titled, “The Vegan Monologues.”
Freston’s honesty is refreshing, as she discusses growing up in a world of meat and fur, and admits she’s not a perfect vegan.
Some may be shocked to learn that while she sports Stella McCartney non-leather shoes, she still wears wool.
Freston has boycotted wool from Australia, where producers use a process called mulesing. During the procedure, parts of the lamb’s butt is removed to prevent a condition called flystrike–maggots eating away at the flesh.
“My motto is, progress not perfection,” Freston said. “I’ll eventually get to never wearing wool. But right now I won’t buy any wool from Australia. Their process called mulesing is very painful to the sheep.”
Freston and the Vanity Fair writer shared a vegan meal together over the conversation, which consisted of grilled seitan chimichurri, grilled-kale salad, chili-herb grilled-seitan burrito, seitan piccata, and Caribbean-jerk grilled tempeh (with plantains, collard greens, black-bean sauce, coconut-and-green-papaya salsa, and habañero-cilantro coulis).
