Quantcast Vegetarian StarKristi Yamaguchi Promotes Safeway’s Lunchbox Winners

Figure skating champion Kristi Yamaguchi has helped Safeway Foods relaunch its  “Lunchbox Winners” campaign, aimed to teach parents how to include healthier snacks in their kids’ lunches. The program was developed to support both the Produce for Better Health Foundation’s Fruits & Veggies — More Matters program and First Lady Michelle Obama‘s “Lets Move!” anti-obesity campaign.

The Lunchbox Winners website contains several recipes, many of which are vegetarian and vegan and include recommendations like hummus and soymilk. Our favorite winner: The Get Jammin’ Diggity-Dog featuring a banana on a hot dog bun with peanut butter and strawberry jam.

“We are committed to helping our customers by offering programs that engage the whole family to make better-for-you choices and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Steve Burnham, Safeway Vice President/General Manager Corporate Produce. “The Lunchbox Winners program gives our customers great ideas that encourage their children to eat well and stay active. It is also why we will continue to support Fruits and Veggies–More Matters public health initiative to motivate people to eat more fruits and vegetables and the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign.”

The program, which has already featured athletes like soccer champ Brandi Chastain and Olympic gold medal gymnast Dominique Dawes, will run throughout the current school year and end in May 2011. In addition to locating information on the website, customers at Safeway stores can find pamphlets  featuring  recipes and easy to find displays showcasing ingredients used located in the produce department.
