Bill Clinton has been chosen as person of the year by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Earlier this year, the former president of the United States announced he’d gone vegan to slim down for his daughter Chelsea’s wedding. He lost 24 pounds, but kept his vegan diet because he’s motivated by studies showing most people who eat a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.
“Studies have proved that vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters,” PETA writes on its website.
“By choosing a plant-based diet, President Clinton has spared the lives of nearly 200 animals a year and reduced his risk of cancer, strokes, and other diseases. Of course, the reasons for going vegan don’t end there. The meat industry also contributes to world hunger, exploits workers, and devastates the environment.”
Clinton revealed to CNN his diet mainly consists of beans, legumes, vegetables and fruit, substituting almond milk for dairy.
