Quantcast Vegetarian StarMichael Vick Wants Another Dog–PETA, Humane Society Give Thoughts

Michael Vick

Michael Vick, notorious for his involvement with Bad News Kennels and dog fighting activities, has expressed his interest in proving he could be a good pet owner again. The consequences of him “failing” the test would be drastic, and two animal rights groups have weighed in on the matter.

“I have been around him a lot, and feel confident that he would do a good job as a pet owner,” Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Vick chose to work with the HSUS on its anti-dogfighting campaigns and has traveled across the country speaking to youth about the cruelty of the sport.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, however, turned Vick down when asked if they were willing to work with him on similar campaigns. Looks like they’re not vouching for him this time either.

“Vick should be banned from owning dogs for life,” Jane Dollinger, spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in a news release this week. “Just as convicted pedophiles aren’t allowed free access to children, anyone who is responsible for hanging, electrocuting, or shooting dogs and who causes them to suffer in other unimaginable ways should never again be allowed access to dogs.”

Vick thinks getting the dog would also help in his rehabilitation process.

“I would love to get another dog in the future,” Vick told TheGrio, an NBC affiliated website. “I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals.”

Regardless of what the public, PETA or the HSUS says, Vick will have to wait awhile before even attempting to show he’s changed.

As part of his probation, Vick is banned from owning dogs for three years.
