Rachael Ray is donating $775,000 to animal shelters, charities and other pet organizations by the end of 2010. This charitable gesture is in addition to the proceeds from her dog food and treats she had developed under her name a few years ago, Rachael Ray Nutrish and Just 6, 100% of which goes to animal charities.

In addition, Ray will help host “pop-up” adoption events during the tour to promote her new book, Look + Cook, in various cities.

“It truly brings a smile to my face to know that this money will help so many animals who just need someone to care for them,” said Ray. “This donation should be credited to our loyal consumers and retailers across the U.S. who purchase Nutrish and Just 6 because they to want to help provide for animals that were abandoned or mistreated. For this, I am truly grateful.”

Ray’s latest donation announcement, plus proceeds from her dog food and treat line, bring her contribution to animal welfare organizations in 2010 to $1.4 million.

If you think buying the expensive, organic pet food for your dog or cat is a bank breaker, just think about the expenses an animal shelter must meet.

From 1996 to 2004, the cost of running animal care and control agencies in Ohio, for example, went from $34.2 to $57.7 million. Local governments may only set aside a third or half of those expenses, while the organizations must raise the rest.

“Non-profit agencies and private donations provide much of the financial support beyond what comes from the government,” said Linda Lord, a research fellow in veterinary preventive medicine at Ohio State University who conducted a study on the outcome of shelter dogs vs. shelter cats in the state.
